[deletia...re: Jimmy Carter for commissioner]

Right. Unfortunately, last time I looked, Jimmy Carter couldn't
negotiate his way out of a phone booth.
>a proven administrator,
I'm not sure that Carter's administrative skills are "proven"...
>a man of unquestioned integrity,
...but that's probably moot because the owners are looking for a
mouthpiece to be commissioner, unless their priorities have
vastly changed in the recent past. I doubt Carter would be
interested in such a relationship, and I doubt the owners would
be interested in giving Carter the kind of power he would want.
Thank you for your time

The definition of "sweet" is when someone does something for you
that you think is really nice and cute, but other people find very
cheesy and faintly annoying.
In the wake of two consecutive strike-shortened seasons, fans have
become disillusioned and apathetic. Though patrons stayed away from
the ballparks in record numbers, the owners have failed to recognize
the extent of the damage that remains. It is time for the fans to take
control, to focus their frustrations in a productive effort. If the
owners will not make a move on their own, we have an obligation to
step forward and demand that they take measures to see that the
leadership is in place to resolve the standing conflict.
After hearing Jimmy Carter offer the Carter Center as a forum for any
future negotiations and learning of his forthcoming campaign to put
Pete Rose in the Hall of Fame, we realized that no other man may be as
qualified as he to assume the role of Commissioner. Baseball needs a
steady, unbiased hand at the helm: a seasoned negotiator, a proven
administrator, a man of unquestioned integrity, and a lifelong fan of
the game. During his presidency and since, Jimmy Carter has mediated
disputes between world powers, monitored free elections in third world
countries, and through The Carter Center has become known as a
statesman of unequaled stature. His love for the game, his history,
and his character make him the obvious choice for Commissioner of
Baseball. Any man who can bring Anwar Sadat and Menachim Begin to the
peace table should have no problem with Bud Selig and Donald Fehr.
With this idea in mind, we have begun a grass roots petition to draft
Jimmy Carter as the next Commissioner of Baseball. We will present
this petition to the Players Association, The Player Relations Board,
the Office of the Commissioner, and each club in the major leagues as
a demonstration of the fans' solidarity and determination. Baseball
fans have been left out of the negotiation process thus far; we must
write ourselves into the equation if we want to be heard. It will take
a groundswell of fan support and many loud voices to make the two
parties listen, and we invite all lovers of the game to join us in our
effort.
The petition may be found at http://www.olemiss.edu/~egcah/carter.htm.
