it is TimeWarner/Ted's answer to FoxSports(Net)South. from what i
hear, TS will essentially replace TBS as the braves "mother" station.

It doesn't matter how high your batting average is, or
how many homeruns you hit, it's about how well you drive
in runs."

Oh NAW, does this mean no more Andy Griffith during rain delays? ;)
I don't believe it will replace TBS as the mother station for the
Bravos... but I DO think they will shift all games that are currently
on FSS (some 25) and the Braves Network (about 30) to TurnerSouth...
And TurnerSouth isn't going to be JUST a RSN... it will also have
Southern style shows
How much is the "Time Warner" element involved?
TBS's contract with Major League Baseball for 90 games runs though 2002 with
options for renewal.
If I were you I would contact DirecTV and ask that they show the channel.
I have a page with DirecTV's contact information, as well as DISH Networks.

That could be bad for us cable patrons. After all, is there any guarantee
that cable companies will pick up this new station?

Those of us with Time Warner as our cable provider, I think are pretty safe....

Well, it won't be on ANYONE'S lineup anytime soon, since it's still in
the early planning stages.
I read something about Turner getting sued by Fox over the sports.
Apparently, when Turner sold an RSN (I think it was Sports South) to
Fox, they signed a non-compete clause banning them from the regional
sports biz for several years. I haven't heard anything since, and I
can't believe someone as big as Turner wouldn't do their legal
homework before making a big announcement.
Turner hasn't been sued yet. According to Multichannel News law suits on non-
compete claused are not very successful either.
That's an interesting questions. Perhaps, the legal loophole is that Turner
South is only going to be showing teams that Turner owns? After all, who
said that Turner South was a regional sports network? Perhaps, they're just
another TNT (like we need one) that will also show sports? Or does anyone
here know for sure that Turner South IS definitely going to be a regional
sports network or not?

Turner South is being promoted as the first "Regional Entertainment Network".
IMO, Turner South will look like TBS did 15-20 years ago.

FX is on at least some of the satellite services. I have it on the Dish
Network.
I guess that Ted will not get a viewer in me then. I refuse to
subscribe to cable for one channel.

Well, FX doesn't do that anymore, because they aren't allowed to. A
court ruled that any channel distributed by satellite must be made
available to DBS services. Only channels distributed by land (like
Comcast Sportsnet) may refuse DBS distribution. Turner South would
have to get their programming across six states without
satellite...not too feasible.
Anyway, here's a quote from Multichannel News...
>Turner South will be
>available to cable and direct-broadcast satellite affiliates in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee and
>regions of North Carolina.
ATLANTA (April 26, 1999) - Turner South, Turner Broadcasting System, Inc.'s
new regional cable entertainment network, has agreed to a ten year deal to
become the cable home of the National Hockey League's newest expansion team,
the Atlanta Thrashers. Turner South will broadcast up to 46 regular season
Thrashers games in the inaugural season, which opens in October 1999. The
announcement was made today by Turner Sports and Thrashers President Harvey
Schiller and Turner South President Bill Burke.
"We are thrilled that the Thrashers have found a home at Turner South," said
Schiller. "Hockey fans throughout the Southeast will now have every
opportunity to track the Thrashers as they climb to greatness."
Burke said, "Turner South is pleased to present the Thrashers games as part of
our diverse entertainment programming mix. This deal gives Turner South cable
exclusivity to the Thrashers in the regional territory."
Terms of the Deal:
Ten year deal extending through the 2008/2009 season.
Turner South may also air some preseason games.
All games will be produced by Turner Sports.
The Thrashers are the 28th NHL franchise and will play in the Southeast
Division of the Eastern Conference along with the Carolina Hurricanes, Florida
Panthers, Tampa Bay Lightning and Washington Capitals. The team will play in
the Philips Arena and have also agreed to have 15 games broadcast on WUPA/69,
the Thrashers over-the-air home.
Turner South, set to launch this fall, is a 24-hour broad-based entertainment
network targeting the Southeastern region. Turner South will present a mix of
movies, sitcoms, original programming, regional news and sports to cable and
DBS affiliates in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee and
regions of North Carolina.
