5'8" 180lbs -- must be built like a fireplug as that's just
10 lbs less than 6'3" Zapp and 3 inches shorter than Brian
who weighs 195 according to my books.
Last I saw he hit a 10th inning game ending HR (2nd of the
game) to raise his ave to 430 with 4HR and 9RBI's in 6 games.
One of these days some writer is going to mention his name
in the same sentence with Zapp (4/24/78) and Cameron (8/31/78)
and Glenn Williams (7/18/77) and I'm gonna croak.

I am under the impression the Braves ARE paying for his daugher's college
education...it's called a paycheck! ;-)

show some emotion! What's with him and Javy? Has Tom been talking to Greg
lately? It'll be interesting to see if Eddie Perez ends up catching Glavine
sometime soon.

Just a note if you haven't already found them -- USA has
their stat section up and running as well as the box
scores.
Giles -- it's just amazing that nobody mentions this guy.
How many 2nd basemen you know doing the DH thing. Of
course he did make 2 errors the other night and had to
drive in the winning run again to make up for it. Even
in the Macon Online he got called Brian at least twice --
we can only hope.
A few interesting numbers from Macon already: I've included
the HBP's that I know about so some of the numbers don't
quite add up. Also a couple key guys from Danville thru only
3 games.

Suddenly, with Graff at the majors, Glen Williams making strides,
and this kid, the organization is loaded at 2B.
Troy Cameron's .480 OBP at SS isn't too shabby so far either.
BTW, Macon's rotation this year has almost as many guys worth watching
as last year's team did: Horacio Ramirez, Byron Embry, Joey Nation,
and Luis Rivera. All those guys have been talked about by the scouts,
and did well in the rookie leagues. The Braves can literally field
three full rotations of good, solid starting pitching prospects in their
minors this year. Off the top of my head (this isn't a ranking):
Rotation 1:
1) Damian Moss
2) Luis Rivera
3) Bruce Chen
4) Odalis Perez
5) Keven McGlinchy (should be in Greenville soon)
Rotation 2:
1) John Rocker
2) Rob Bell
3) Micah Bowie
4) Derrin Ebert

1) Jason Shiel
2) Joey Nation
3) Horacio Ramirez
4) Byron Embry
5) Ray Beasley or Joe Nelson (OK, I'm stretching a bit for this last one).
That's an amazing amount of depth. I'd say that a little over half
of those guys are potential 1-3 starters, while the others could
be solid at the bottom of a rotation. I hope I'm not getting
carried away, but I honestly believe that we currently have better
and more pitching in the minors than we had in the late 80's. I
don't think another organization can go close to 15 deep like this,
and I even left off a few names that are fringe prospects, but still
worth watching.
--Gregg, who is getting anxious for more of the good prospects to
start filling up the AA and AAA teams so he won't feel so insecure
about the future.

bet he's well put together. Actually his OBP is closer to
545 since I left out a HBP, but included the extra PA.
Just saw another site tonight that listed all the prospects
in the NL arms and Giles wasn't mentioned at all, but Cameron,
Zapp, Lehr, Ewan, Rivera/Quevedo were all listed from Macon.
Is there anybody in the majors right now at 5'8" or 9" who is
hitting a lot of HR's. Lemke was 5-9 but only 160-165, Blauser's
only listed at 180 and he's 6'1". Maybe Ron Santo or Ron Cey
for 3rd basemen would be similar body frames with power.
Knoblauch is listed at taht size, but doesn't have the power
that Giles has shown so far (Giles doens't have the SB OTOH).

5'8'' and 180 is well put together if, as I imagine, it's muscle.
I'm 5'8'', work out alot, and lots of people comment that I look
strong, but I'm lucky if I can push my weight much past 165 without
just getting fat. I can't even imagine what someone like Barry
Sanders, who is 5'8'' and 205, looks like in real life.
Also, Giles might be bigger than that now, since sometimes these
height/weight listings don't get updated after a player signs.
I know I put on weight between 17 and 20.

I think Gant is 5'10''. Hmmmmmm. I think Hank Aaron was 5'10''.
Other than Kirby Puckett I'm hard pressed to think of a
recent guy his height who hit for good power. I don't even
care too much if he keeps up the power. I'm impressed by his
command of the strike zone. At his age, few players have an
almost even ratio of K's to BB's. With the high BA's he's
been putting up, that alone would make him a valuable offensive
player. The fact that he seems to have alot of pop is gravy.
On the other hand, the fact that he's 5'8'' may explain why he's
not getting recognition. In the lower minors especially, prospects
tend to get pegged by scouts rather than performance. If this
guy doesn't physically fit with their/our preconceived notions
of what a guy who hits like he does is supposed to look like,
he likely engenders alot of suspicion about his ability to continue
hitting as he moves to higher levels. That would cause him to
get overlooked maybe all the way until he does it at AA.
You know, Marcus Giles is fast becoming my favorite prospect
anywhere. :-)
Gregg, whose a sucker for an underdog who keeps proving
"them" wrong, whoever "them" might be.

Lamar, how many came after he left? Could the farm be picking up again?
Does JS have a chance to redeem himself? ;-) (well, this all still depends
on if we actually keep these guys and the pitching prospects long enough

They all came in after he left. Almost all the real prospects in the
system have been added since he left and Snyder got his old job back.

Looks that way to me. Lots of pitching, and now a few position
prospects are starting to pop up. Heck, if Lombard does have a breakout
year the system will take a quantum leap forward in my estimation.
And Helms is doing very well at Richmond so far. If Wes has a solid
year there, that will make for a very good, prototypical
minor league career: he'll have moved up a level a year, always at
the prime age for his league or under, and will have had success at
every level. Those kinds of players almost always end up being at
least solid major leaguers. He won't be Scott Rolen, Adrian Beltre,
or Aramis Ramirez, but he'll be in the next tier of 3B'man and a
good player to have on the team. I don't know where they'll play
him though.

Not that I've noticed. If he's still hitting well around the
all-star break, I think we'll get a better bead on the Braves
plans for him. If he moves to the OF, that means they want
to use him. If he doesn't, either they're going to trade him,
or move Chipper somewhere.

Actually, I just looked up Rickey Henderson who's listed at 5'10" and
190lbs (260HR's)-- wow! Tony Gwynn 5'11", 220 (and I think he's a bit
more). Tim Raines is 5'8" and listed at 186lbs (159HR's)

I thought something similar when I saw his height, but when he outhits
and outslugs Zapp and plays 2B, it seems somebody would notice --
particularly with his bloodlines.

Speaking of Beltre, I looked him up tonight in AA Texas League
and this kid is something else. He jsut turned 20 yo last

Because major league baseball clubs are run by general managers who
believe that "veteran leadership" wins pennants, not "quality
ballplayers". For example, witness the designated hitter (using the
term "hitter" very, very loosely) for the Kansas City Royals.

I always thought Giovanola's defense was at worst decent? Some measures
put him well above average, and throw in that he could play 2B, 3B, and
SS.
The common factor here is walks. All of these guys have less strength in
hitting for power and more for hitting for average with a ton of walks.
And baseball conventional wisdom just doesn't grap the importance of
drawing walks.

Petagine's, but Martinez led Southern League third basemen in
total chances and DPs in 1985, led the Southern League in fielding
percentage in 1986, and led the PCL in total chances and DPs in
1987. I thought Martinez' defense left a lot to be desired, too,
but aren't these the stats that scouts like to use? I know
they're flawed -- maybe M's scouts are into DA??
