This is a nice AJC article regarding Maddux. Perhaps Leo says it best.

Excerpt:
Mazzone, who's running his annual pre-spring training camp for pitchers at
Turner Field, said that replacing "Mad Dog" isn't possible.

"Greg Maddux is a guy who brings so much to a pitching staff on days he's
not starting," he said. "He's smarter than anybody I've been around. He
loves being on the field, and even his teammates look at him in awe.

"He provided us with the greatest pitching in the history of the game for a
long time."
