Playoff pitching rotation

rotation the Braves will use in the post season. For a seven game series
would they use a three man rotation of Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz, all
piotching on three days rest so that Maddux gets three starts, or stick
with a four man with Avery getting a start and Mercker going back to the
pen? If Avery is only pitching fair at the end of the season, the Braves
will have a tough decision.
I am sure the Braves would go with a four man rotation for the first, five
game playoff series, with Maddux pitching twice.
Also, one or more of the current relievers will likely be left off the
post season roster. With Mercker going to the pen, they would have seven
relievers. Most likely Bedrosian gets left off the post season roster,
unless Stanton is gone by then. Even if Stanton is gone, I say leave
Bedrock off the roster and add another bat.

pen and let Mercker be part of the 4 man rotation? I think it's possible.
Though Mercker is more valuable out of the pen as he's done that in the
past. I agree with you on Bedrosian. Isn't his ERA above 5??? Granted
he's a veteran, but come on. When the magic is gone-----retire.

Indeed. Mercker would likely be sent to the pen, since Cox would
probably want a guy there who can throw hard and who has had more pen
experience.

Probably; sadly, though, that might limit the amount we can use him in
subsequent series. Grrrr... I hate that we now have three levels of
playoffs.

Wow, hadn't thought of that. Yeah, I guess it'd be Bedrock, though I
don't know who would constitute the other bat. Maybe Tyler HOuston from
AAA, since Cox likes to carry three catchers in the postseason, and we no
longer have Cabrera (I know Houston has been playing 1B this season, but
I'm sure he can still be used as a catcher).

Well, now we know that Stanton is gone, so how does that affect the
equation? I still say leave Bedrock off the post season roster. I have
visions of him giving up a gopher ball in a crucial situation. I still
say add a bat, but I also do not know who it would be. Houston's stat at
Richmond still don't impress, but nor do those of anyone else on that
roster. Since Sharperson is gone, the Braves don't seem to have any of
those type players, the major league vets who are enjoying a revival at
AAA. Maybe we can pick up a bench player after some more teams fall out
of the wild card races.
I do not know about the Stanton trade. The guy has certainly struggled,
but that is explained in part by the fact that the Braves have carried
eleven pitchers all year when they have starters who fill a lot of
innings. I think the Braves could use another lefty in the pen, but I
guess Mercker will be there in post season.
