I have Internet Explorer 7 Beta 2. Now I want to up to Beta 3. The
problem:

I deleted the C:\Windows\$NtUninstallie7bet2p$ directory a while back to
make room on my hard drive. In retrospect; that was a very bad idea.
However, due to removing that directory; I most certainly do not have
$NtUninstallie7bet2p$ \spuninst\spuninst.exe and therefore cannot remove
Beta2. When I run the Beta3 install; it says I have to remove Beta2. Is
it looking in my registry to decide I have Beta2 installed? Is there any
way I can do the Beta3 install at this point? I went into regedit and blew
away HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed
Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383} and that did not seem to
help. So then I put it back in. I uses WinRAR to unzip the Beta 2
download and rebuilt the C:\Windows\$NtUninstallie7bet2p$
\spuninst\spuninst.exe but when I ran it, it said it wanted to delete
Windows XP. So I cancelled out of that.

You know, I spent nearly $4000 on a new laptop all of about three weeks
before those MacBooks were announced. I'd have grabbed one of those in
a heartbeat if I had known they were coming out so soon. Still bitter,

I had no idea there was even such a thing as a $4K notebook anymore. I got
an IBM Thinkpad as absolutely loaded as I could less than a year ago, and it
barely clipped $2K.

Apparently! I thought $2K was pricy for a notebook; but I wanted a
hyperthreaded CPU and 4 gig of ram. The most juiced up Thinkpad is the
T60p; and as absolutely loaded as it gets, it barely clips $2K.

Tom must have bought an Alienware Aurora mALX. Those things have 19"
screens, dual graphic cards and a graphic accelerator, and dual AMD 64 bit
Turion's.

Don't waste your time on the Alienware desktop. I looked at one for my
wife; and instead ended up with a loaded Dell XPS 700 Monster. Granted
that we are on the EPP and get almost 1/2 off; but I really think the Dell
is a better computer even if they are the same price. Dell boxes are built
so heavy duty that I cannot imagine the Alienware being better. I think
Alienware is just a prestige thing among gamers. My only beef with Dell is
that they take 2 months to build these things; and then I think they ship a
month later because Mike Dell autographs each one personally. I bet
Alienware probably ships the next day after you order it.

Most laptops don't have 2 gigs of ram and dual core processors, etc etc.
My work has pernicious hardware requirements.

Alienware for the win. I don't remember what oddball name mine has, as
I spec'ed it out in December. It's a very solid machine and has Nvidia
hardware, something in its favor over the Apple/ATi offerings.

I think my T43 is NVidia 7500 series; though I am sure my G41 is ATI.
My G41 is hyperthreaded dual core; and it has 2 gig of RAM. I have loaded
SAP on it and can support about 10 users wirelessly. The T43 - well the
only selling point for it is that it is light and fluffy and won't kill your
shoulder lugging it from airport to airport.

There's a weird little tidbit I never knew about Dell computers.

Based on your comment above, I'm not sure I'd bet on that anymore.

Huh? Besides new Macs running Windows natively, other than the odd .avi what
file type are you referring to which a Mac can't run?

I WAS a relatively loyal Gateway customer until my recent experience
with two notebooks, for my daughter and me. As of now, I'd never buy a
Gateway under any conceivable circumstances that are likely to occur.

I ordered my Alienware the first week of December and it took 5 weeks to
build and ship. Apparently the issue was with the scarcity of the case
and the type of screen I ordered. I suppose little can be done about
supply issues, but this circumstance did not thrill me.

Cisco VPN - remote login to client sites
Office 2003, Visio, MS Project, Netmeeting, etc.
SAPgui for Windows

I ordered mine by calling the EPP family plan call-in number back in the
first week of June. The 3rd week of June when I checked up, they said they
had no record of my order and had to place it all over again (how can they
lose it - they have SAP, for chrissake). I checked in this morning online;
and it has not even gone to kitting yet (the first step). It is still just
sitting there in pre-production. The expected ship date is listed as the
first week in August. They never seem to come on time; so I am guessing
it will get here about the 3rd week of August. I have about 10 or 15 Dells
already; and that has been the shipping trend. They never show up on time
for me. So, if you add in the screwup on the original order; it is
taking me about 2 1/2 months to get the workstation. That seems a bit
long, no?

I know they're having a tough time competing at today's prices and some
analysts have questioned whether they could survive. I've always gone back
to Gateway, not because I haven't had hardware problems, but because their
customer support was so effortless. Now maybe they are losing thatl. My
problem was back in January when I returned a failed monitor (I mistakenly
said hard drive earlier) after they had sent the replacement. I shipped it
using their provided return label, but when they said they hadn't received
it, they charged my Amex. I shipped from a Pakmail location, and on that
day, FedEx apparently had some computer problems and as I tried to follow
the tracking number to be sure they got it, it never showed up in their
system. It was all very nasty (and unnecessary) and the only thing that
saved me was that the PakMail had scanned the box in. It still took a long
time to get the charge ($698) removed.
