so the brewers are leading the mets 10-3 when the mets step in for the
top of the 9th. game is pretty much over. first batter flies out, so
everyone heads for the stands. then someone named murphy doubles, and
david wright doubles, and apparently the mets aren't going quietly.
then sheffield homers, so the score is now 10-6, and the announcers
start talking about the bullpen. the camera shows trevor hoffman
sitting there like the hero of an old cowboy flick: leaning against
the wall, arms crossed over chest, cap pulled low over the eyes.
motionless. so ryan church singles, and trevor gets up and starts to
stretch. then martinez hits a slow grounder to second, but the second
baseman bobbles it and both runners are safe. so what had been a
blowout is now a save situation -- the tying run is on deck. so the
pitcher, catcher and pitching coach stall a little while to let
hoffman warm up, then "Hell's Bells" breaks out. hoffman jogs in from
the pen, throws his warm-up pitches. the batter steps in.

one pitch. grounded into double play.

there is only one Trevor Hoffman.
