"With righthander Freddy Garcia schedule to return from the disabled list this
week, the Mariners suddenly have too many quality starters for one rotation.
Righthander Paul Abbot (3-0, 2.03 ERA in five June starts) is a likely
candidate for the bullpen, which already holds righthander Brett Tomko (4-2 in
eight starts this season). 'I'll be honest, I don't know what we're going to
do,' manager Lou Piniella says. 'Usually these things are clear-cut because
somebody's struggling or hurt. We've got no such thing.' One benefit: with
arms to spare, Seattle may find it easier to acquire the lefthanded bat that
G.M. Pat Gillick has sough since spring training."

Prying Tomko away from the Mariners would probably be difficult (after all,
they have to have something to show for the Griffey trade), but does anybody
know anything about this Paul Abbot dude? Would the Braves be able to put
together a package to get him? Would he be worth getting?

Paul Abbott would be a nice addition, but I don't think Gillick would be that
stupid.
He's better than Halama (who should be the one to return to the pen). It should
only get better for the M's next season when they try to find a spot for Ryan
Anderson. If they traded anyone, I would guess they move Tomko or Halama.

I don't know anything about him; however, with our different rookie/young
options for starting pitchers not being used, I don't imagine JS is
looking for anyone but a proven, veteran starter.

Where does Erickson qualify as solid to win? His ERA is over 7, for crying
out loud, and hasn't struck out more than a guy every other inning in two
years. On top of that he has a monster contract with two more year
remaining, I believe.
I think Erickson has become Gammons' latest trade project, though a few
others have jumped on the bandwagon.
I've been discussing all these trade runors with a friend via email, and
one hallmark of Schuerholz trades over the last few years has been
unpredictability. When was the last time he made a midseason trade that
everybody saw coming? And he seems even more evasive when it comes to
getting pitching. Nobody saw us getting Neagle, Mulholland, maddux.
I think a deal will happen, and I think it's entireoy possible we'll
overpay for whoever it is. But I think, if it isn't Neagle, it'll be
someone not mentioned at all so far. And I think it'll be the usual
Schuerholz thing where he tries to fill two holes at once.
Just my hunch.
Colin
Santa Claus is not real. Oops, sorry. Erickson is a solid loser. No help
there.

Braves are supposedly looking at Todd Ritchie....

a solid #4 starter. younger than most. as long as he doesn't cost a
marquis or a chen then fine.

Trade Project? Gammons has sounded like Erickson's agent all year. Ashby is
having a better year than Erickson.
Why did you ever trade Neagle?
This rumor came up about mid_may, I think, hadn't heard of it since then.
Speaking of trades that didn't happen, remember Rocker+Chen for Pavano and
Urbina? For a while there Pavano was looking real strong, but now he's run
into his annual injury. Urbina is out for the year.

> Why did you ever trade Neagle?
Pick one:
Excuse #1: "Sometimes you have to give up
quality to get quality."
Myth #2: The Braves received "the best 2B
in the NL in return."
Falsehood #3: Denny Neagle was damaged goods.
