K Srikanth is India's sports success of the year
If we can move away from the glare and glitter of
cricket, football and tennis, we will be able to spot
India's biggest individual sporting achievement for this
year - shuttler Kidambi Srikanth's great leap forward
from rank 47 to rank 4 in the course of just these past
12 months. The 21-year-old rising star from Guntur had
started the year on a strong and confident note. Having
won the Thailand Open Grand Prix Gold in December 2013,
he was placed at a comfortable rank 47. He had just
secured his first men's single title and his spectacular
defeat of Boonsak Ponsana, then ranked at number eight,
had ushered him into the limelight.
In the first half of the year, he maintained the
momentum: He was a runner-up at the Indian Open Grand
Prix Gold event in Lukhnow and a quarter-finalist at the
Malaysian Open. But these were not exactly stellar
victories that one can write home about. Then in July,
Srikanth came down with a severe bout of meningitis as a
result of which he even had to spend a couple of days in
the intensive care unit. Some may have thought that his
physical ailments would hamper his game but Srikanth
proved them wrong. He returned to the court soon enough
and played with a vengeance. He participated in the
Commonwealth Games in Glasgow as a member of the Indian
badminton contingent that reached the semi finals.
