KELOWNA CLUB GEARS UP FOR NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Some 220 badminton players are expected to compete for national
masters titles the week of April 23rd to 27th. Competition will be in
six age categories: 35+, 40+, 50+, 60+, 65+, and 70+.
Of the 101 players from British Columbia, about 30 are from the
Kelowna area. Some of the local contenders for titles are Henry Paynter
Jr., who holds the 1994 title for men's singles in the 40+ category, and
Bob Brooks, 65+ men's singles winner for 1992 and 1993.
Testing the mettle of Canadian players will be 25 competitors
from the United States, a contingent of ten players from Taiwan, and
four from Japan. Across Canada, entries have been received from
Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, Northwest
Territories and the Yukon.
Early rounds will be played at two venues - the Kelowna
Badminton Club at the corner of Richter and Gaston, and at the Okanagan
University College's north campus gym. Over 500 matches are expected to
be played in the course of the tournament. Semi-finals and finals will
be played at the Club, the former on Friday, April 26th and the finals
on Saturday, April 27th.
Spectators are welcome
