While I was joking around with the lady at the health food store about my
excessive use/abuse of tanning beds, she advised me to start taking 1000-2000mg
of L-Tyrosine one hour before tanning. She said that it would speed up the
tanning process and cause me to get alot darker as well. Does anyone know if
using this supplement is effective for accelerated tanning, and what else can I
take for tanning acceleration? I know this is a bit off topic, but I don't want
to reveal untanned muscles, so anything to darken my skin would be beneficial.

I know through personal experiance that a diet consisting of high
protein can counteract the effects of burning caused by sun exposure.
Instead of being burned after sitting in the sun I found that I got a
pinkish glow which didn't hurt and went away quite quickly.
Though I didn't tan since I am ghostly white, I plan on trying this
method again.
So by a good chance you may get a similiar result with what you've
suggested, though I am not positive on this.

L-Tyrosine is a precursor to dopamine which produces various
neurotransmitters. I have seen l-tyrosine as a component in many tanning
accelerator products when I go to the tanning salon with my girlfriend. I'm
not sure why it is in these products. If I find anything, I will post the
info to the group.

Try L-tyrosine and copper. Someone sells a tanning accelerator with these
two ingredients.

L-tyrosine is a precursor to melatonin which is in turn a precursor for
melanin (the skin pigment that we associate with tanning--and most other
variations in skin colour).

IMO, the chance of enough tyrosine from a topical ointment seeping into the
skin cells and having an impact on a person's tan is small. But it is
obviously not small enough for some companies to think that it will be
marketable as an adequate tanning aide. Perhaps if it is used in large
quantities. Or perhaps they know something that I don't...

Tyrosine promotes melanogenesis, so it should improve the ability to tan. Several
of my clients, as well as myself perceive a difference. I am rather fair
(blond/blue), normally don't tan that easily, and get noticebally darker when I use
tyrosine.
I, however dose, somewhat differently, ie, 1000mg (1 gram) an hour or so before
hitting the tanning bed, and another gram or two within 3 hour of tanning. To each
his own.......

I posted this question several weeks ago and since then I have consulted a
plastic surgeon about removing a tatoo on my arm. This L-Tyrosine subject kind
of leads into this, because the surgeon told me that after it was removed(by
lasers) there would be a temporary scar in the shape of the tatoo where the
melanin has been cut off for so long. He said it would take anywhere from a few
months to a few years for the scar to completely heal up(for the melanin to
return). I'm curious, could taking L-Tyrosine and frequent tanning speed up the
healing process and cause the melanin to fill back in more quickly. I know this
is off-topic, but I figured somewhere could tell me if this is a possibility.

Thanks in Advance.

I could be wrong here, but I thought that when you have an operation or
anything that leaves a scar, it is very important to avoid the sun at all costs
because it will cause the scar to remain.
