I have been trying to find out the name of M. Showman (1946
English Amateur Billiard Champion) and recently spoke to an old
chap who said he was Jewish, and called "Mendel".

At least that is how it was pronounced -- does anyone know the
correct spelling of this name ? Is it a normal Jewish name or a
corruption of a longer one ?

Any help would be appreciated

Peter, I asked this question to a friend many years ago (1983, if I
remember correctly), and was told that the "M" stood for "Manny", or
Emmanuel.

This backs up the Jewish connection, but makes the name different. I'll get
back to you on that one.

It was definitely "Mendel". He was a great friend of my Uncle Henry Markland who promoted Snooker and Billiard matches etc at the Tower Circus in Blackpool. He frequently spoke of him and I met him on several occasions at Uncle Henry's hotel when I ould have been 8 or 9 years old.
