Re: Answer to shanks !!!

The world you live in must be quite utophic !!!! The attitudes that affects
women is in clubs like a working mens club or Conservative club. Up to a
year a go that had stringent rules, which meant that after 6pm women were
not allowed to play at all,and could only play before then with a full
member (mostly men) !!. Although a lot of the rules are been recinded, the
attitudes of the older members is still that it is heavily frowned upon if a
women is playing and a man is waiting to play. Those clubs I have been in
though my job the sexist attitudes I mention are plenty still there. Women
should have an equal right to everything. If you have never come up against
these attitudes you have never lived in ther real world.

Hello,
I don't know of any social club (bar 1) that allows women to play snooker at
all in Newcastle.
In fact there's only a handful that let women enter the bar. These
attitudes, far from being held by the elder members, are prevalent amongst
all age groups where I live.
Saying that, when a women appears as if by magic in my local club bar, it's
always the same pensioners mafia who are first to toss her out, usually 4 of
them, one to a limb.
If the same woman re-offends she has to wear one of those metal things on
her head with the spike on that keeps the tongue from moving, thats so
unfair I think.

Well Simon - I am afraid that it is a very familiar scene to me over
the years - and to many other lady players.
We found several years ago that adopting the strident approach did not
have a very good effect and that the softly softly approach worked
better.
One way that we forced the issue into the open - around the country
was to form all women league teams - this forced leagues to reappriase
their rules - and it turned out that under Euro rules and Human rights
and all that stuff a League cannot disbar women players. An individual
club - depending upon its type of formation may impose rules banning
women from the bar or snooker room etc - but I believe that this only
applies to private members clubs. The Leagues are obliged to impose
rules on the "offending" clubs - In most cases (our local league
certainly) if a club doesn't allow the women players in then they have
to play their "home" match at the away venue - very soon this has the
effect of attracting pressure fromt he team players in that club of
wanting their club to change its rules - They plays the girls out
around the league - and are then disadvantaged by having to play away.
This also applies to Juniors, where a lot of clubs don't allow under
16s or under 18s or whatever.
Withthe upsurge of the "new" snooker clubs in the 80s, facilities
became available which openly welcomed the lady players - better
environments and good custom for the club from the lady players, so
lady players became more familiar - obviously it tends to cost a lot
more to play in these venues, than the old 20p in the meter - but
normally the facilities tend to be a lot better. So we are not
dependent upon the old sexist clubs any more - fortunately because you
can see these "people" coming a mile away - I served as League
Secretary recently - and one night, in the pouring rain I had to
deliver an urgen message to one of the teams, so I walked over the the
club - a Conservative club - and walked through the bar heading for
the snooker room - when the steward stopped me and told me I couldn't
enter - ladies only on match nights! - I asked him if he knew who I
was - no - and that I was a league player - no - and how do ladies
practice for matches if they could only use the room on match nights -
didn't know - did you know it is 1996 not 1886 - er major tantrum. Sad
little episode - I had gone to give a team a final warning of a fine
and suspension and this git wouldn't let me deliver the message - so -
hell of a shame - his team got fined and suspended from the league -
last time I was going out in the rain to try and do someone a favour!!
Back in 1986 we formed an all Ladies Team at Feltham in Middx. The
girls travelled from all over and the team included Allison Fisher
(handy in a crisis) We were due to play at Hounslow Conservative
club - but Ladies weren't allowed. The team players from the club told
us - come along anyway, we're going to get the rules changed - so off
we went - Ructions!! The team players were really nice and wecoming -
it was the bar people that caused all the problems and the worst were
the women - we're not alloed in why should you. It's the rules. (Why?)
It always has been? What about Margaret Thatcher the Prime Minister
can she play on your tables? No!! Results of this fiasco was that the
story ended up in the Daily Mail (at that time very pro Tory) showing
up what a farce it was that the country had a women pm, but that women
couldn't play snooker in most con clubs around the country. The
workies, labour clubs etc are just as bad - but it does seem to go in
pockets of resistance in certain areas:
South East Wales - the Valleys - very dogmatic! North West and
Yorkshire and North East England are bad spots as well. Cornwall had a
revolution with club owners and players ganging up on their league
Chairman - who resigned in protest a few years back when they allowed
the ladies in!
I remember the girls in the Eastbourne area fighting for 14 years
before being allowed into their local league. The south of England
seems to have dragged itself into the 20th century and I only hear of
a few clubs here and there these days.

But if any of you hear of a League, either Billiards or Snooker, that
does not allow women to play - then they are breaking the law....

Never mind chaps, it's a whole new millenium soon - perhaps your less
enlighten bretheren will get their act together - but it isn't just
the fellas - behind all these poor blokes trying to find a refuge with
their pint - is some harradan at home - imagine having to go home and
tell the missus you lost to a girle - rolling pin job that. I played a
pro am once where this poor bloke's wife spent the whole match trying
to intimidate me and talk me off the table, anything so that HER bloke
won - her bloke got absolutely slaughtered!! I felt desparately sorry
for him - but he married her!

So I have lived in their real world - and I don't care for it much - I
have a very low tolerance level - so I am better keeping out of these
people's way - I do my talking on the table - play the game in the
proper spirit, and hopefully win, but always remember that every lady
player, whenever and wherever she plays is representing her entire
sport - quite a burden to carry - but it really is true. Earn their
respect - however grudging!

Attention Shanks !!! (try reading a book about snooker & life first !!!,
sorry try learning to read properly first !!)

As Peter Ainsowrth has backed me up, more people play snooker in social
clubs like that than ordinary Snooker Clubs. The local Snooker club I play
at is outnumbered nearly ten to one in people playing there than the local
social clubs. Too often people are wanting to pay 80p per hour for crap,
poor quality tables in social clubs than pay about four pounds an hour in
proper snooker centres with very good quality clubs. Obviously there are
some excemptions. Oh by the way, there is plenty coming my, more than I can
handle sometimes !!!!

I guess I must also live in Utopia. The four clubs I frequent in Auckland are
all working overtime to attract women members. The reason is very simple - the
more members, male or female, the more money going into the poker machines (the
life blood of clubs in New Zealand).

One exception being the club I am in the process of joining. Use of the tables
is free and the three tables had new cloths put on last Wednesday!

The life in New Zealand sounds very politically correct. It is very good to
hear that there are some places in this world that are trying very hard to
attract female members in the snooker world. And tables for free, isn't
that sometimes called heaven. Don't tell me the beers always cold and free
!!!! Well, I think I know were I am going on holiday next, to get away from
blighlty !!!!!

Never mind NZ, Janie! Come to Melbourne!
Our tables cost $2 (80P) per DAY. And you can meet and play with(I mean
against) such nice young gentlemen as Steve Mifsud, James Mifsud, Johl
Younger, etc...
AND.....
The new Victorian Confederation of Cuesports (still in the process of
formation) is planning money tournaments for lady players.

Hi, everyone, I'm a newbie to this group, a silly Aussie (Pom) sod that
actually spoke to Jimmy White on the phone last year. I went to pieces when
he picked up the phone. Super bloke though. I'm not new to Newsgroups, but
love snooker so much I thought I'd lurk and then put my toes in. Come to
Sydney and in nearly all RSL Clubs the snooker is FREE all day long, and
women are welcome all the time. The more the better. And you all thought
Australia wasn't fully emancipated, didn't you. Well almost. I never let my
wife hold a cue, as she'd poke your eye out with it ;-)

We also get top quality Billiard tables for free in australia, same reason
as NZ, to attract you to the club for gambling. If you don't gamble it
really is quite free.

However I don't think that that is a good thing for the game. If you get it
for free it has no value.

The game thrives in the UK beacuase there is money in the game at the grass
roots level, clubs can employ coaches and resident pros and can sponsor
tournaments.

Even at a social level where players may play for the cost of the table, it
provides a motivation to get better.

No, scratch that. Tell that here, and he'd never win a tournament again

That's a rose tinted view of grass roots snooker in the UK these days.
It certainly isn't the overall picture. There are a few enlightened
clubs, who arrange coaching and tournaments, or even give a young
player free practice time, but they are few and far between. With no
disrespect to anyone, having a resident pro isn't a lot of value,
unless a) he is a qualified Coach and has the time to devote to the
members, or b) he is a big name player who inspires the members and
attracts business to the club.
The old days of having a resident pro seem to have largely drifted
away.
Over here the clubs (well most of them) quite simply wouldn't survive
without the "bandits" in the corner, but the licences are very
expensive - and of course the under 18s aren't allowed to play them,
so some club owners may be discouraged from having the "sprogs"
filling their club, because they won't be the big spenders - a little
foresight would make them realise that the kids are the next
generation of members, players, pros etc.

Let's see.. acoording to Dejanew^WDeja.com, I've made 'about 16000'

Yeah, I should get a life, but due to circumstances mostly beyond my
