SEEDS PLAY OUT ON DAY 1 AT JUNIOR NATIONAL RACQUETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS
PORTLAND, Ore. - The top seeds played to form at the opening day of the
Ektelon 25th U.S. Junior Olympic National Racquetball Championships. The
United States Racquetball Association event, held at the Multnomah Athletic
Club, is presented by Penn Racquet Sports.
Over 300 juniors from around the nation took to the courts Saturday with play
beginning at 9 a.m. (Pacific Time). The boy's and girl's 18-and-under doubles
titles went up for grabs today with the Nos. 3 and 4 seeds surviving. The top
two seeds in each bracket were idle.
On the boy's side, third-seeded Willie Tilton (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and
Matt Gehling (Annapolis, Md.) handled Georgia natives Marcus Hughes and Che
Lopez 15-3, 15-0. Meanwhile, the fourth-seeded team of Nebraskans David
Liakos and Andy Tucknott advanced past Minnesota's D.J. Skillings and Kyle
Zins, 15-3, 15-7.
Defending girl's 16-and-under singles champion Brooke Crawford (Klamath
Falls, Ore.) and partner Kristen Walsh (Salt Lake City, Utah) - the girl's
18- doubles third seed - cruised by Meghan Guardiani and Michelle Helie 15-7,
15-1, while fourth seeds Megan Bals (Lincoln, Neb.) and Kristen Kovar
(Lincoln, Neb.) downed the Emily Daniels-Kelly Ford duo 15-2, 15-5.
Although the top girl's seeds will begin singles play on Sunday, the boy's
were in full force on Saturday. Going for his eighth junior national singles
title, Michigan's Jack Huczek downed Adam Rieders (Bonneville, Ore.) 15-1,
15-3 in the first round of the boy's 14-and-under bracket.
In the 16's, top seed Shane Vanderson (Dublin, Ohio) put away Ryan Anderson
of Salem, Ore., 15-4, 15-9, while the draw's No. 2 seed, Scott Foster
(Pleasanton, Calif.), had little trouble with William Northrop (Klamath
Falls, Ore.) 15-1, 15-2.
Current world junior champ Rocky Carson (Santa Maria, Calif.) defeated Chuck
Stivison (Boise, Idaho) 15-2, 15-2 in the boy's 18-and-under draw. Second seed
Josh Tucker (Joplin, Mo.) was equally successful in his debut - putting away
Jason Bronson (Glendale, Ariz.) 15-3, 15-4.
Play resumes at 9 a.m. on Sunday at the Multnomah Athletic Club.
