Has anyone here ever managed to break a frame? I am amazed at the
durability of some of these racquets, i have literally swung for the
fences at a drive serve and hit nothing but the top part of the frame
numerous times and it never seems to even scratch the racquet. I makes
me wonder how much abuse these racquets can really take before they
break. A couple of weeks ago i was playing with my old ektelon rebel
and took a full swig only to find a buddy of mine was swinging at the
same time. Our racquet smacked together and my old ektelon received
nothing but a paint chip... I'm wondering, has anyone ever broken a
frame, and if so, how did you manage to do it. i would b interested in
hearing your story...

Thanks

I have broken a couple. Although I doubt that it has anything to do
with my playing ability (or lack thereof).

Thinking back ... I have broken 4 racquets.

1) Ektelon Omni - Frame broke on wall hit
2) Ektelon Omni - Handle broke (can't remember how that one happened)
3) Ektelon Mirada - Broke in the neck ... that was a known design flaw
as I recall. But it was still a great racquet for the time.
4) Ektelon Attitude - Broke frame in top corner second time playing
after being re-strung. Probably was a flaw in the frame.

Not bad really ... 4 racquets in almost 14 years of playing (off and
on).

Replacement Attitude has a good chip on it where a friend and I whacked
racquets in a doubles match. But it is still good.

I managed to break a frame about a year ago i the same method that you
described where you only got a paint chip. Went to hit a shot in the
middle of the court and my partner did too. We collided racquets, but I
didn't notice anything that night. The next time I played I notice the
break in the frame down towards the throat. It was an Ektelon
Deliverance. I know one guy who has broken 2 Nore Attitudes in only a
few months though one was due to swinging underneath a guy who was
jumping who then landed on it, snapping it in two. Another guy I play
with broke a DPR 2500 a month after he got it when he swung into another
guy's racquet. Some frames are just better in general, I guess.

Interesting... It seems that everyone who has replied has broken
Ektelon Frames, i wonder if this is because ektelon uses a lot of
graphite in their frames and graphite is a softer material. I wonder if
anyone has ever managed to break a metal frame (ex. Titanium,
Liquidmetal, or even aluminum). Or, maybe it could just be that ektelon
is truly the most popular brand in racquetball and many more people use
ektelon than any other brand of racquets...

Yes, of course they break. Make sure you save the receipt for a year
from purchase.
Sometimes they seem indestructable and sometimes they break with what
seems like just an untimely tap on the wall.
Sometimes a small crack forms and the stick doesn't really break- that
is, until you go for restringing. Then it just shatters in the
stringer's machine.
If you lose a close game to your arch-rival and smash the racquet
against the wall in a fit of anger it will most assuredly be broken.

You said "A couple of weeks ago i was playing with my old ektelon rebel

and took a full swing only to find a buddy of mine was swinging at the
same time."
Sounds like you were playing cut-throat or doubles. You gotta
communicate with your partner. "I got it" or "YOU"- saves racquets;
saves heads too. :)

Obviously if someone smashes their racquet into the wall during a fit
of anger i would expect it to break... At that point though, I wouldn't
consider it breaking a frame while playing, that is either outright
stupidity or just being rich enough be be able to smash away $180 of
hard earned money. Honestly, if someone does smash a good racquet into
a wall out of anger, they deserve to have it break on them so they will
have to buy a new one and maybe learn a lesson...

Just my 2 cents...

Hey! Watch it! I resemble that remark :) Actually my E-Force
Judgement Stun 175 has taken some serious wall abuse and it still
hanging in there.... I few chips in the frame but thats it.

If u simply cannot resist, hit the wall straight on with the racquet.
That typically mimics a wall paper shot anyway and is least
destructive. I learned really fast not the take a karate chop shot at
the wall. That will definately take care of the frame for ya.....

A little tip from your uncle vinnie....... :)

I know of two people that are pretty good at breaking frames. No
racquet to racquet contact... no wall to wall contact... simply hard
swings, strong wrists, and frames that are lighter.... like in the
145-155g range. One of these people went through 9 (yes nine) of the
same model of racquet. I know these guys, and know they way the
play...so no abuse was done. The racquets usually break at the
shoulders... 10 and 2 oclock spots on the frames. I also know the
string jobs weren't a factor... a Master Racquet Tech strings their
racquets.

So.. the answer is a resounding yes... frames do break out of the blue,
from a combination of being weaker in certain spots on the frame, and
the sheer strength of the swing a player has.

Yes, on a racquet to racquet hit.

Just bought a Pro Kennex Infinity 165 had it less that two weeks. Playing
the back court and stupidly set up about a foot off the glass. Turned
around to return the serve off the glass and forgot how close I was snapped
the racquet right in the middle of the head. That same night we played cut
throat and my partner at that moment went for the same ball I was going for
despite the fact I had the forehand shot and was ahead of him so he
definitly saw me. Well somehow or another the side of his racquet ended up
smashing into my eye giving me a nice shiner. Thank goodness for safety
glasses I couldn't imagine what would happen if they weren't on. Needless
to say that night sucked.

I resemble that remark. I've broken Heads, Kennexes and E-Forces. I'm sure
given a chance I'd snap the other brands too. I break a frame about every
5-6 months on average. My weirdest frame break ever was inside the bag. I
have no idea what happened. I put the racket (A Kennex 15g from about 1998)
away after playing and when I got it out again it was seriously broken (the
frame was bent about 20 degrees). I have no clue what happened.

Unfortunately its easier than you want it to be. I broke two racquets
during tournament play this season and both were during doubles play. My
poaching partner couldn't let the ball go even though I was on top of
the shot and taking it. He swung at the ball as it was leaving my
racquet and crushed my frame at the 8 0'clock area. I traded partners
for the next tournament and the samel exact situation came into play
AGAIN. I quit playing with my singles racquet and started using a much
cheaper model for doubles. Plus I select a double partner much closer
than I did before too. Since then I have played in 12 doubles matches
without any further racquet breakage.
BY the way any racquet brand will not warrantee any breakage as a result
of that kind of break. Its definitly considered abuse and rightly so.

AS far as regular play , with the occasional floor bump, wall scrap, Dig
or rally miss hits I have not had a racquet break so bad it wasn't
useable. They are pretty hard to mess up unless you really have a
defective frame from something during manfactureing.

Rocky Carson was at our club recently (Exhibition match with Zack Pope, then
played everyone to a game of 5 points) and I asked him: "How many frames do
you break in a year?" Reply: . . with the new Head liquid metals only 3
this year, with the Ektelons I'd break 12 to 15 a year - mostly from
sidewall contact."

I've actually got a crack in my frame, but that's more due to a rare
outburst of temper after a very bad game. :)
