I was just looking at the draw sheets for National Singles and there have
been some big upsets. Doug Eagle beat Adam Karp in the quarters 15-13,
6-15, 1-9, and Jack Huczek took out Mike Bronfeld 15-4, 11-15, 11-3. The
other two semifinalists are Rocky Carson (beat Brian Fredenberg 5-15, 15-11,
11-9) and Dan Fowler (who beat Jimmy Lowe 15-9, 15-9). Looks like Jack
Huczek is really coming on strong.

#5 seed Kevin Grahman (from my club) is looking good as the highest seed making
it to the semifinal round of the Men's 30 Singles. Jim Minkel is also in the
semis...I watched Jim take a game off Jason Mannino last year at the US
Open...he is for real. Don't know the other two semifinalists...Delle Donne and
Costleigh, but they took out the #1 seed (Okie Dave Watson) and #2 seed John
Davis, respectively.

Go get'em Kevin, where all pulling for you at home.

correction: Minkel took out the #2 seed and Costleigh took out the #3 seed (Rick
Ferrin). Kevin took out the #4 seed Rich Baer to get to the semis.

Just following up on the RacMag piece by Christy Hyde on the National High School
Championships...14 year old Adrienne Fisher ended up beating defending champ,
Kristen Walsh. But in Houston, Adrienne bowed out early in the first round to
unseeded Laurdes Sanders while Kristen took out Doreen Fowler in the second
round before getting spanked by Jackie in the quarters. I suspect Kristen was a
bit nervous playing Jackie...same thing happened to several other players in the
US Open when facing Jackie...they play strong in the earlier rounds and I suspect
are so thrilled to be just playing Jackie that they fold and it's over before
they know it.

Good to see the young women coming up through the ranks though.

BTW..."unseeded" Doreen Fowler is in the semi of the Women's 30 Singles...along with
#1 Michelle Lucas and #2 Lorraine Galloway.

In my division...

US Racquetball Head Coach Tom Travers lost in the quarters to unseeded Greg
Hodges. Travers is seeded #1 in the 40's and #2 in the 45's (course Tripod is
the main man in the 45's).

Tim Hansen beat an old Chicago friend of mine (Bill Lyman) in the 16's and Bobby
Haab in the quarters...Tim seems to be playing well...think he took a game off
Mike Locker in the earlier rounds of the Open draw too.

Fellow cheesehead Gary Tanko made it to the quarters to get beat by unseeded
Miguel Cruz from nowhere'sville.

#2 seed Dave Peck lost in the first round to fellow Austinian Noel De La Rosa
(did you know Austin, TX is the sister city of Madison, WI :) who rounds out the
semifinals on the bottom end.

My pick is fellow Wilson Staffer Tim Hansen.

Rhonda is also rolling in the Women's 24- division having beaten top seed Suzi
Acosta. #4 Adrienne Fisher and #3 Kristen Walsh (high shool champs finalists)
are in the quarters along with #2 Brook Crawford.

I think Suzi was one of those young lady's who played great in the Promus US Open
last year until she freaked out against Jackie P. Does anyone remember Suzi's
outfit in her match against Jackie? All I can say is ... CALIENTE!

Jim Minkle is the ultimate club player. I saw Jim when he was winning "C"
tournaments in Houston in 1983. A strong kid with power but lacking skills. He
has slowly learned his game in the Opens over the course of the years.
Everything Jim hits he "cracks". In one of my tournaments he broke 6 brand new
balls in a single game and that was without a graphite racquet.

It's Kevin Grahman vs Jim Minkel in the finals...two great players. I've seen'em
both play and either one could win...but I think if both we on 100%, Kevin would
come out on top...he's quicker.

Good luck to both players...GO KEV!

BTW, did you really think there could be two different Steve Wattz's
each who play racquetball at a remarkably high level. Come on now.....

Just saw Rocky take out Jack in the semis. Jack started up 7 -1, but
Rocky controlled from there.

Eagle took out Fowler in the other semi. Tremendous match. Dan
destroyed Doug in game 1 (15 - 3). Dan had his chances in game 2 but
lost 15 - 13. In the tiebreaker, Dan is server 10 -7 and hits what
seems to be the game winner, but Doug flies in the air out of nowhere
and barely gets his racquet on the ball and hits a pinch roll-out.
SHOT OF THE TOURNAMENT! Dan gets the serve back still at 10 - 7 and
holds up on what seems to be an avoidable. Match over, perhaps? No
way, Rich calls "just-a-hinder" and they replay. Close call. MUCH
easier to call the avoidable early in the match, but at match
point??!!?? Doug gets on a roll and eventually closes the match with a
nice roll-out, 11 - 10.

I'm picking Rocky for tomorrow. He is playing tremendous racquetball
and should be able to take care of Doug. The crowd is WAY behind Doug
(Texas guy) and Doug seems WAY focused and motivated and may just have
destiny on his side. But I'm still picking Rocky. Can't wait.....
Jackie and Cheryl will also be a great final.

played awesome in our reg.

Congratulations to my friend and fellow club member Kevin Graham on winning the Men's
30 Open National Championship title. I believe this is Kevin's 3rd major
title...think he won 25+ Nats and US Open a few years ago.

Kevin is a great ambassador of the sport...sponsored by Head and also gives free
clinics at Supreme Health & Fitness Club, Madison, WI.

Also congrats to Jim Minkel...looks like they had a real battle as Kev pulled it out
11-8 in the tiebreak.

Man...wish I could be there...there's always next year ;-)

Well, Richie must also be a great player to beat out Chris Wright in the Men's
Open round of 32 and take Jack Huczek to a tiebreak in the quarters.

Leading up to the Nationals I would always ask Kevin how he was playing and
what he thought his chances were. He'd say it all depends on the situation at
the time...sometimes he's playing great and sometimes not as good (which is
great for most of us on ANY day :). These guys are so good...this is where
the mental game comes in as a big factor. Kevin is very mentally tough...much
like Cliff Swain...but Cliff also loses as does Kevin...fortunately he had
what it took to win today.

Delle Donne and Costleigh were both at the baltimore regionals...
Costleigh is a New York guy who used to be a top top player..
he's just getting back into Rball. Wouldn't be surprise d to
see him take it.
