Just wondering... Have any of you guys ever picked up a 'soft'
triangle?

I put a triangle on my cue today, and I was rather disappointed with
it. It's supposed to be a hard tip, but it actually felt softer than
the triumph tip I had on my cue previously.

I also noticed that it was tougher for me to draw the cue ball, and
the feedback from my stick seems almost non-existent...

Is this normal, or did I get a bad triangle? And is there any way for
me to pick the hardest triangle in a box, without using any tools?

Triangles are normally pretty consistent, and hard. I've never seen one I'd
call soft.

I'd say you got a bad one. I've never ssen a really "soft" one, but I have
seen some that were dead. One way to test for hardness is to bite the tip
(but a retail store might not appreciate this!). Another quick way to see
if a tip is dead or not, is to drop the tip onto a hard surface, such as
glass or metal. A hard tip will bounce and create a high pitched sound, a
dead tip will not bounce (or not bounce as much) and will go "thud"!

Welcome to the joys of 1 piece leather cue tips. For consistency, this is
why I recommend a laminated tip (I like the Moori MH). You can find a 1
piece tip that plays every bit as well, you just can't find them as often
(or as easily!).

Over the years I have put on hundreds of triangle tips. Unlike LePros,
Triangles have always been a very consistant hard tip. However the last box
that I opened I noticed that the tips looked differant than usual. They are
the same color as always but they are thicker and much coarser than usual. I
have used about half of the box with poor results. They are much softer than
usual and mushroom quite easily. I only hope that this is just a bad batch
of tips and not that Tweetens quality control has went to hell on the
triangles as it has on the LePros.

Before giving up on it completely, you might try cutting it off, sanding
the bottom flat, and glueing it on again. It is possible that the glue
didn't stick to the surface, or that there is a air pocket under the tip.

To line up the trimmed tip with your ferrule, wrap a few rounds of
scotch tape or masking tape around your ferrule, and align it so that
the tape extends beyong the tip about 1-2 mm. (This technique was
suggested by long lost Thomas Wayne.)

Well, the Triangle I got was a bit thicker than I expected, and it
also wasn't as smooth. I guess that there is a bad batch. I just
hope that that's all it is.

What is a triangle? Is it a kind of tip, or a shape of tip?

Just an update of what happened... I took the tip off and pressed it
really hard in a C Clamp. It seemed to improved but when I put it
back on, it felt just the same. It was so soft that if you push your
fingernail into it hard enough, you'd leave a mark.

I went back to Triumph tips. I had one pressed in a C Clamp and it
plays real great, and I love the feedback it gives.

Speaking of which... does anyone here use Triumph tips? I haven't
heard anyone else use these tips. This surprises me because I think
they're pretty good.

I've used them and they are a decent tip. However, I found that I really needed to pre-compress the tips before use, otherwise they
mushroomed quite a bit.
