Feigning innocence now are we? How quaint.
In 1998 Mike Shamos called Jean Balukas the most dominant pool player in
history. In 1988 she competed against Robin Dodson in the Brunswick World
Open in Las Vegas. From Shooting Pool: "Leading 3-2 in a race to 9, Dodson
sankthe 9-ball twice on successive break shots, prompting Balukas to make an
audible comment each time. As Dodson was preparing to break again, Balukas
spoke up once more. As a result, Dodson became rattled and Balukas won the
next seven games for a 9-5 victory and went on to win the tournament. Dodson
finished tied for third and filed a complaint with the Women's Professional
Billiard Association (WPBA), which had sanctioned the event."
The WPBA fined Balukas $200, which Balukas refused to pay because the fine
had been imposed by other players and not an independent. For example, in
baseball, the comissioner sets the fines, not the other players. She did not
refuse to pay the fine in defense of her behavior.
After five years the WPBA and Balukas settled, alowing Balukas to compete
again.
As of 1998 she was still working the family business, Hall of Fame Billiards
in Brooklyn, but was not competing. However, when Mike Shamos visited her
for his book, Balukas did not miss any shots over a two hour photo shoot.
