FIRST CALL FOR VOTES (of 2)
unmoderated group rec.sport.jetski

Newsgroup line:
rec.sport.jetski Discussion of the sport of jet skiing.

Votes must be received by 23:59:59 UTC, 9 May 1996.

This vote is being conducted by a neutral third party. For questions
about the proposed group, contact the proponent. For questions about
the vote itself, contact the votetaker.

Proponent: Bruce Holms <bho...@itchy.nafb.trw.com>
Votetaker: David Bostwick <david.b...@chemistry.gatech.edu>

RATIONALE: rec.sport.jetski

The use of Personal Watercraft (PWC) more commonly known as the
sport of jet skiing is growing in popularity, with record
sales of new PWC reported each of the last several seasons.
According to the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA),
PWC sales hit 142000 units in 1994, a 33 percent increase over 1993.
The NMMA expects 1995 sales to be 180000 units, comprising nearly
one-third of the boating industry's 1995 sales. Coincident to this
rise in popularity has come the expansion of access to the Internet
and its many resources. Accordingly, participation in the newsgroup
alt.sport.jet-ski has risen steadily over the last year. Today
we have hundreds of participants and a rapidly rising traffic level.
Last year a typical winter day would see 10 posts and a typical
summer day would have 30. This winter we have seen steady traffic
averaging in the 40s and given the ratio of 3 to 1 (in-season to
off-season) observed in the past, it is reasonable to expect 100+
posts per day this summer. Joining the group recently were several
vendors of PWC products and two prominent PWC publications. In
addition, it is anticipated that the major PWC manufacturers will
soon become a presence within the group. Altogether, the future of
the newsgroup looks quite promising for jet skiers around the globe.

Given that the rec hierarchy is much more widely accepted and better
propagated around the net, it appears logical and desirable to move
the discussion of this popular and expanding sport into a group in
the rec hierarchy.

CHARTER: rec.sport.jetski

The scope of the proposed newsgroup rec.sport.jetski includes the
following topics, though discussion is not limited to those topics:

- new PWC
- old PWC
- unique/specialty PWC
- safety awareness
- environmental issues/responsibility
- maintenance tips
- performance tips
- performance modifications
- parts/repairs
- riding techniques
- weather reports
- water reports
- club news
- travel information
- where to ride
- racing events/results

The discussion will be held in English, and a FAQ will be created,
maintained, and posted to the group periodically.

The newsgroup is not intended as a marketplace, however relevant and
reasonable commercial announcements are allowed so long as they are
clearly marked as commercial announcements in the subject line of
the message. Non-PWC-related postings are not welcome.

END CHARTER.

HOW TO VOTE

Delete everything above the top "-=-=-" line and delete everything below
the bottom -=-=-" line. Do not change anything between these lines,
except to add your name and vote.

Give your name on the line that asks for it. For each group, put your
vote in the brackets next to the group name. Valid entries are ABSTAIN,
CANCEL, NO, and YES. Anything else may generate an invalid vote. Don't
worry about changes in spacing or any quote characters (">") that your
reply may insert.

Mail the ballot to <david.b...@chemistry.gatech.edu>. Just replying
to this should work, but check the "To:" line. Votes must be mailed
directly from the voter to the votetaker. Distributing pre-marked or
otherwise edited ballots is considered vote fraud.

Only one vote is allowed per person or per account. Votes will be
acknowledged by e-mail. If you have not received an acknowledgement
within a few days, contact the votetaker. It is your responsibility to be
certain your vote has been recorded correctly. If you want to change your
vote, you may vote again, but only the latest vote will be counted.
Addresses and votes of all voters will be published in the final vote ack.

The purpose of a Usenet vote is to determine the genuine interest of
people who would read a proposed newsgroup. Soliciting votes from
disinterested parties defeats this purpose. Please do not distribute this
CFV. If you must, direct people to the official CFV as posted in
news.groups. When in doubt, ask the votetaker.

OK everybody, as you can see, the CFV for rec.sport.jetski is here!

But, for the vote to pass, 2 things must happen:

- Yes votes must outnumber No votes by 100 or more (Y >= N + 100).
- Yes votes must be 2/3 or more of the total votes (Y >= 2/3 * Total).

It won't happen unless *you* vote, so just do it! Read the CFV for
the instructions.

My vote will be going in within the next 10 minutes.

OK guys, come on, it's getting close to crunch time on the new news
group thing. Some things you may not realize:

--> Voting **CLOSES** May 9. That's next Thursday.
--> "YES" votes **MUST** outnumber "NO" votes by 100.
--> "YES" votes **MUST** outnumber "NO" votes by a factor
of two.
--> There are people in the news.groups group whose purpose in
life seems to be to vote "NO" to every proposed group that
comes along.

The alt group is not carried by a lot of news servers, and it's
slow as hell (some posts don't show up here on my server until
*days* after it was sent). The rec group should clear up some
of this.

I have already voted, and asked everyone I know to vote (not
many unfortunately), so now I'm asking *YOU* to take 5 minutes
and send in your vote. Email david.b...@chemistry.gatech.edu
(that's the votetaker) and request the CFV for rec.sport.jetski.
Follow the directions therein, and return it to the email address
given. I'm serious, once you get the CFV it takes less than 5
minutes!

It won't happen unless you fellow enthusiasts help make it happen.
BTW, if you've already voted, THANKS!

There appears to be some major league problems in how the votes are being
tallied. I voted "yes" as soon as I saw the first ballot and got the
confirmation. I have several friends who did likewise. Reading this
group shows a bunch of others who did also...yet none of us have shown up
on the list of "yes" votes published here recently. It doesn't do us
much good to vote yes if the votes aren't even counted!

Votes listed here are informal and infered from postings. The actual vote
tally is by the nuetral party that cofirmed your vote. The final results
will be posted with names at the end. It is important to get as many as
possible to vote YES so get your friends with access to vote today. Don't
bother the vote counter!

The "YES" votes posted in this thread were counted from posts to the
newsgroup NOT THE ACTUAL TALLY.

There are also a few who are able to access a "bogus" rec.sport.jetski
newsgroup, dont accept this as an indication that the group has
accumulated enough yes votes!

PLEASE VOTE!

The count here was totally unofficial and you had to post here to get on that
list. It has NOTHING to do with the official count. Nothing. As long as you
got a confirmation from the vote taker when you submitted your vote, it
will be counted.

The "tally" which you have been seeing posted in the group is only an
unofficial count being taken. It is not representative of everyone
who has voted and does not count for voting purposes. It is merely
an informal means to see how close we are getting as the real votes
wont be known or made public until after the voting closes.

YYYEEESSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!! Now when I read somebody's reply to a post, I
won't have to guess what the original post said. I might actually get to
see it. This will be exciting...but probably not quite as nice as my new
GSX. :-)))))))) I'm going to have it out for 4 days next week at
Havasu. I'll tell you all how they work.

By the way, a MAJOR LEAGUE BIGTIME THANKS to BRUCE HOLMS for doing the
rec.sport.jetski thing. Thanks...thanks...thanks.
