Tried installing Solaris 8 on my PC today. Seem to go well in that it
identified all the devices. Then it put up "configuring /dev and
/dev/devices". During this time it "pinged" my floppy drives and then
indentified the devices and rebooted off of the installation CD which put me
into an "installation loop".

I have a "vanilla" Pentium 4 machine with two 128gbyte drives. Any
thoughts/suggestions/solutions?

tia,

Ron

Can you be more explicit about the "loop" please ?

During the installation the process "pings" my floppy drive while it is
"configuring /dev and /dev/devices". This
goes on for about a minute. Then all devices which are configured are
scrolled to the screen at which time the computer
reboots. Now the system reads the cdrom installation cd and goes through
the same series of questions as before. Then "configuring /dev and
/dev/devices" and reboots again.

Most likely a kernel panic. To read the kernel's panic messages, you
have to load it under "kadb" control. Boot from the "Software 1 of 2"
CD, and at the "1 interactive or 2 custom jump start" prompt, type

b kadb -v

instead of "1" or "2". Now kadb is loaded, and kadb loads and runs
the solaris kernel, but this time you should be able to read all of
the kernel's error messages.

With that information, you can try google for a possible solution
(most likely someone else already got the same problem).

If google does not find find anything relevant for your specific
problem, post the panic messages and the stack backtrace.

Don't forget to mention the exact SunOS release you're using, and
detailed hardware specs of the machine.

Right I can see where it is getting up to now.
Looks like Jurgen may be hiting the mark, but have you been through bios
settings ? (disable PNP OS ?)

Also some tips available on http://www.bolthole.com (notably he ACPI one)

Thanks (all). I will give it a try this weekend. I have to cannibalize a
backup drive for my Linux (sorry) installation and try again.

It boots the first time from the CD. When it boots again and prompts you for
where to boot from, you toggle it this time to boot from the hard drive.
