Hi Folks:

It's been many years since I've worked with Solaris, but I'm back
now and I'd like to set up a nice development environment.

I've decided to go with OpenSolaris, for no particular reason. I'm
open to suggestions.

Today I'd like to get backup and recovery going.

I'm glad to see Andrew Gabriel is still posting to Solaris
groups.

A few years ago he created a nice pair of scripts to backup and
recover a system.

A nice feature of Andrew's script was that anybody could perform
the recovery. Low level format the drives, boot Solaris from the CD,
pop in the tape and run the script that was on the tape's first
record. When finished, boot to a restored system.

The script used ufsdump to create the disk images, so individual
files could be recovered as needed.

Now I'm using whatever file system OpenSolaris installs by default,
is this UFS or XFS? The system drives are SATA instead of SCSI, and
I'll be backing up to an external hard drive.

So, what are you folks using for backup and recovery?

Thanks
Larry

ufsbackup for those of us on limited budgets. There are third party
products available; e.g. Netbackup, if you can afford them. Netbackup
is expensive but will handle "enterprise" backups; from a "Master
System" it will backup all your Unix, VMS, Windows, and Novell servers.

I didn't have to pay the bills so I can't tell you what to expect in
that department; just don't give the job to anyone with a weak heart!

OpenSolaris uses ZFS. You should probably look at Amanda for backups,
as that has support for ZFS snapshots etc. (Also see Zmanda.)

Paul Franz recently posted to the solaris-x86 mailing list that
Code 42 software has a beta of its CrashPlan off-site backup
software.

I haven't tested it, but I thought it might be of use to
developers and content creators who might bounce between
Windows, MacOSX and Solaris.

I use Joerg Schilling's star to archive my Solaris filesystems
to remote NFS servers.
