Hi,

Can someone point the web links to download the ISO CD Image
files for Solaris 8 installation on intel machines. I downloaded
the "sol-8-10_00-install-fcs-bin-ia-ml" such files and they don't
appear to be the ISO files. Thanks in advance for your help,

Terry

You cannot get these ISO (probably Rock Ridge) images legally
at present, but you can request your software media and an
unlimited number of licensed for $75.00 USD + shipping/handling.

Hope this helps,
Igor.

Well, things have changed (since yesterday?) ...

If you want to, you *can* download the contents of the Solaris 8 10/00
mediakit now. Apparently the download even includes printable CD
labels :-) Check:

http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/binaries/get.html

(800 Mbyte minimum download, ~ 2GB (?) for the complete solaris 8
download. Probably without staroffice, the companion CD, netscape
and oracle stuff - these can be downloaded from other web sites)

Really good news! I probably will try in my Omnibook 4100 (I have
a lot of problems installing Solaris 8 06/00 on it at present).
By the way, can be the Software Companion CD be downloaded or only
the individual packages available from Sunfreeware?

Juergen,

I downloaded "sol-8-10_00-install-fcs-bin-ia-ml"
from http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/binaries/get.html.
It was a zipped file. After unzipping it, what should I do?
Should I write the whole file onto a CD? It doesn't look
like a ISO image file. I tried adding .iso to the file
and write it on CD, didn't seem to work. Any suggestions?
Thanks a lot for your help,

Terry

AFAIKT, the contents of the march 2000 (?) version is available at

http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/downloads/indexWeb.html

(repackaged as self installing "WebStart" java class)

I suppose that the march 2000 release of Solaris 8 (the first release
available of Solaris 8) is available for download because it is the
release supported for "Solaris Source Foundation" developers.

Not sure if we can write about these matters in these newsgroups
(see the Solaris Source Foundation Release license agreement).

Probably you can. Solaris 8 06/00 Companion CD do not includes stuff
like Gnome but the software provided should work in a release that
is the same Solaris version with some patches and enhancements.

Hi, James.

I think you cannot get the stuff provided with the Companion CD. This
useful cdrom is provided with the Solaris 8 media as a value-added
package for people that buy Solaris. You will probably need to buy a
new software media (but I cannot say nothing about Sun, in fact they
are offering StarOffice for free when it was a commercial product and
now even ISO images of Solaris 8! When the WorkShop C compiler as part
of Solaris?).

You can try to get precompiled binaries for Solaris 8 from either
the Gnome project homepage (http://www.gnome.org/, but at present
they only offer binaries for UltraSparc architectures) or Sunfreeware
if available (I think that now it is not available for download).
In any case, you can build it from source.

Hope this helps,

7. Unzip the CD images using unzip software (e.g., pkunzip). Each time, this
will create a file with the same name as the file you downloaded but without
the .zip extension. That file is a CD image (up to 650 Mbytes); make sure
you have space on your hard drive. Then, create a CD from these images using
your favorite CD creation software. Depending on the software package you
use, you will have to rename the file first to have an extension the
software recognizes as a CD image. For example, if you use Easy CD Creator,
add the extension .iso to the file name. Next, from the File Menu in the
program, select Create CD from CD image. Then, select that image file.

This should do it, right?

You do not need to download that diskette but you can. If you have a
bootable cdrom drive (it depends on the BIOS and it is supported since
1998) you can use the cdroms you have build to boot without a floppy.
I suppose that the ISO images have El Torito extensions to make the
operating system bootable without the DCA diskette but I have not tried it.

I did just as described. After downloading the first three ISO images
(installation-cd, software-cd 1 and 2), I burned them with WinOnCD on
three CDR. The two software cds look good, but unfortunatly the
installation cd is broken. The filesystem is broken, it show only ~96k
data under windows and nothing more... and it is not bootable, after
the blue boot screen it turns grey and the second stages bootlader
hangs...

Does anyone have a clue, what could be the problem?

Thanks for your help,

If you check previous postings to this newsgroup, you'll find many
people convinced that not even Sun has figured out how to produce a
working Installation CD, and that you should just toss it out and
start from the "Disk 1 of 2" CD.

I am sorry, but I cannot help you. I looked for that message
in the "Solaris Common Messages and Troubleshooting Guide"
(Part No. 806-1075-10) without any luck. I recommend you
to check all the steps in the installation process. Perhaps
someone with more knowledge in Solaris can help you.

Now you can try to install XFree86 (but you will need to check the
list of supported hardware). Check too the last Solaris updates.
Some patches add support for new hardware. It worked for me with
my unsupported NeoMagic NM2160 chipset.

Ferry Schuller <fsch...@eu.uu.net> wrote:

What install CDs? If you have got the iSO images from Sun Microsystem
you probably will have three cd-roms (the INSTALLATION cdrom and both
the Solaris 8 1 of 2 and 2 of 2 cdroms). Both the INSTALLATION cdrom
and the Solaris 8 Software 1 of 2 are supposed to be bootable. If not,
you can try to boot from the DCA diskette.

If you have the commercial version you will have a lot of cdroms
not included in the downloadable release (the European and Asian
documentation cdroms, the useful Bonus Software, StarOffice, Oracle,
etc...).

Try booting from the Solaris 8 Software 1 of 2. If it not works (?)
try booting from the INSTALLATION cdrom and, at last, from the DCA
diskette. Not sure what is the recommended way (sure that Solaris 8
Software 1 of 2 is the preferred way but I cannot say if it is
better to boot from the diskette or directly from the cdrom). If
your BIOS do not supports bootable cdroms try (1) to upgrade your
BIOS release, (2) to boot from the DCA diskette.

> Igor you are great man thanks for al your time it looks i'm a silly

No in both cases! I am not a great man, a lot of people help me much
more last months that I am helping you now. And you are not a silly
Solaris user, you are starting with this new operating system. Some
weeks ago I had the same problem (I learned recently how to install
the Solaris operating system from the INSTALLATION cdrom instead of
the Solaris 8 Software cdrom) and I had some problems that probably
sounds silly but that really stopped me some days (by the way, I am
not sure how these problems go away yet).

Hi Igor and Ferry,
DSL went dead for a couple of days there. Anyways, there doesn't seem to be
a limit on how big a drive can be for installing Solaris. My 7 installation
went on a 30GB IDE fine. I was going to install 8 on another machine with a
9GB SCSI, but the downloaded images I have are bad.

Igor, I was wondering if you know how to configure sendmail. I'm having a
hard time configuring it to relay from my internal machines to the outside
world. Thanks.

Hi, Daniel!

SCSI hard disks has not a limit in size (at least I do not know it),
IDE hard disks can fail (if it has been not patched yet) with HDD
greater than ~36-40 Gb (I think that the limit is -was- 38 Mb). With
disks smaller than 30 Gb you will have not problems installing Solaris.
Hard disks greater than 8 Gb was supported with Solaris 2.5.1 with
the Driver Update 11 installed.

I do not know a lot about sendmail, but I can say you that you can
edit /etc/mail/sendmail.cf to change the DS register to look some
like 'DSrelay.yourcompany.com'. It will define the smtp server that
will be used by sendmail. Check too that you have a MX register
in the local DNS.

Hope this helps!

Obviously, I wanted to say 38 Gb!

Not sure about the last answer to this question. I wrote that you
can define a DS register to give information about the relay host
to the MTA and I wrote too that the host that will receive mail
requires a MX register in the DNS.

I don't know if it was exactly what you was looking for. If the
problem is related with the internal hosts in your subnet, and
not with the Solaris host itself you probably are looking for
an implementation of a protocol like POP3 or IMAP.

Can you explain what is your problem? It is related with the
Solaris host (it cannot send e-mails because it do not knows
what relay host should use) or it is related with the network
workstations (the internal workstation cannot send e-mails
through the Solaris host)?

The web page says that those are iso files. You need to add
