Hi all,

The antiquated system board on my Solaris 10 PC is ready to give up
the ghost, so what are recommendations for new hardware (system board
+ processor + RAM) that will work well with Solaris 10 for a limited
budget (say under $200)?

Many thanks!

Dell PowerEdge 1750. The Millennium Falcon of servers. Old, clunky,
draws a lot of power, but virtually indestructible. Got mine with 2x
32-bit 3.06GHz Xeons and 2GB RAM, 2x 32GB SCSI HD plus RAID controller
for £50. It's on Sun's HCL for Solaris 10 and OpenSolaris. I'm running
the latter.

Hi,

My brother purchased a cheap HP/Compaq Dual Core AMD 64bit system on to
which I installed Solaris 10. The specs indicated that it would only
take 4GB of RAM, it currently has 6GB with one free memory slot which
should allow it to upgrade to 8GB. I replaced the onboard graphics with
an Nvidia GeForce pci-e card and added a second SATA DVD-RW DL. Here is
a link to Best Buy for a similar type of model.

The only problem he had during the first year was a PSU failure but that
was replaced under warranty. The cost more than your $200 but you are
getting more than just a Motherboard, CPU and Memory. These type of
units do tend to be very quiet in operation my experience having
installed around 10.

thanks for the replies, though I really don't need all the other
components. It was really nice to see that NVIDIA actually had Sun
drivers for my video card.
