I've successfully installed OpenSolaris 2009.06 on the ex-work 1750 I
bought recently. I understand Dell provided a set of power management
tools for Windows. Is there an equivalent that will work with
OpenSolaris?

To answer my own question: there's the handy PowerTop tool from Sun
and Intel for keeping the Xeons cool, and some useful command line
tools that I will have to investigate... once I've bought a pair of
ear defenders.
