Hi Folks:

I'm still just dabbling with Open Solaris, hoping to get deeper
into it soon.

Today a popup informed me that I have some updates waiting for me.
I clicked ok and was presented with a long list of updates and a
choice of "Cancel" or "Update All". "Click Update All to create a new
boot environment and install all packages into it".

So I selected "Update All".

Another window popped up reporting a problem, and instructing me to
run:

pfexec pkg install SUNWipkg

So I cut and pasted that command into another terminal window,
where the install appeared to run without problems.

Then I selected "Update All" again.

Another window popped up immediately, with "Update All" in it's
caption.

What do you suggest?

I have no particular reason to use Open Solaris over Solaris. Is
Open Solaris the right choice for me?

Thanks
Larry

Ignore the update manager GUI. All it is doing reduces to this:

pfexec pkg image-update

There are some extra arguments you can add, but they're entirely
optional so I'd ignore them for now. They're described in the man page.

I'd stick with OpenSolaris, but you need to expect some brokenness
sometimes. With boot environments (like image-update is creating for
you) it is very easy to reboot into a known working OS update if you
get problems.

You updated the pkg utility but probably the GUI had not picked that up
(yet). Maybe you should have closed/opened it first before clicking
"update all"

Thanks Chris and Dick:

I haven't done much with OpenSolaris, so I'm just going to install
the new 2009.06 and go from there.

Thanks
Larry
