In my part of the USA, it would be expensive with poor return on
investment. It sounds like a very inefficient collector with lossy
storage. I think your MTD approach would produce better results.
Facilities have to be made for cleaning the sludge out of the bottom of the
tank every ten or twenty years, though. A septic tank with insulation may be
just the ticket. It has cleaning ports and can stand up to traffic above it,
buryable and holds about 1000 gallons or more, hooks for lifting it into
place.

Look at a hypocaust floor. Katchadorian made these do a Google. You are on
about a Trombe wall laid flat. Insulation has to be like a tray.
