THINK DIFFERENT
You can tell those people who us PC. They are the ones who ask, how can I run this light with Solar Power? The real question is, I need light how can I get it? Defining the problem correctly will lead to the problem being solved. As long as you think in terms of making solar power run inefficient equipment designed for the grid you will be disappointed. The real success comes from asking the right question and getting the right answer. You must keep in mind that grid power may turn out to be the right answer.

As an example a friend who is an instrument maker by trade has a lathe that runs on solar power, this is not a toy, the distributor for my classic bike was made on this lathe along with an assortment of pumps, cycle parts and weird and wonderful machinery parts as well.

Ask questions. Ask lots of questions. Ask the right questions.
Buy an Apple and think different.

George,
we can ask all the questions we want! BUT, if people and industry aren't
going to make real choices to switch to solar power, nothing will chnage.
A few weeks ago, I bought a portable AC/DC solar power unit at
www.solarsense.com. Cost was then $280 which included the unit, connection
cables, and a 21 watt Uniolar PV panel. The unit is designed to provide
both AC & DC power up to 300 watts. It works great, and using the solar
panel, I can watch TV in the evening for a few hours.
This is only one type of investment that can be made in solar generated
power and usage.

That type of thing makes people feel good, but the overall impact on energy
usage is probably less than zero (it takes energy to make that stuff).

Solar gets all the publicity and "let build a million acre array" stuff, but
the simple fact is that the US could easily reduce it's energy consumption
by 50% at a MUCH lower cost by conectrating on energy efficiency. I cannot
recall how many hundreds of times I have spent time on the phone explaining
to people that before you can think of going to solar, you are going to have
to get rid of that electric stove and hot water heater.....

Does it strike anyone besides me as ironic that this guy is reciting
a mindless advertising slogan in order to prove he is different?

Sounds like he is as much a slave to the mass media marketing machine
as anyone could ever be...

To all the kind people who responded
12 years ago I bought my solar power and have not looked back. My point is
that
using solar power is much easier when you give up being a power junkie. It
will be
many years yet before solar takes on the grid. I can watch tv every day and
listen to music, have lights all night as well and have not paid a power
bill in 12
years. This computer (Apple of course) runs off solar as well as the printer
And modem and cd. I also run my three soldering irons and battery drills
(with out their batteries) off solar.
In fact i do solar power installations with solar power.
So how big is this wonder system I hear you ask.
4 solarex 42 watt panels 6 320Ah gell cells 1 12v 22A regulator 1
150W sine wave inverter
This year I have lashed out and bought 2 80w VLX Solarex panels to boost my
input.
I avoid mains powered equipment where ever possable. Think Different is not
just ad
hype. Reread my posting and pay attention to the part about defining the
problem. I and others
do think different thats what makes our lives here possable while some
people have trouble comming to grips with how to run a light from a solar
panel. The Apple is a good example as the problem was to run a computer on
solar. Ok ring up some PC suppliers and asked which laptop will run off 12
volts. Answers ranged form Huh to why would you want to do that. Then i rang
an Apple dealer and asked which laptop would run off 12 volts. answer all
with adapter.
Guess which computer I bought. Another example in the house I am building I
have 15 separate lights in the kitchen / dining room all 5 or 10 watts not
more than 4 of them on at any one time. Light work areas not the ceiling.

George,
I've always heard it as: "When in danger or in doubt, run in circles, scream
& shout!".

Depends If you are sitting at your computer and you get the message that you
now have a virus are you in danger or do you just panic because you know
that your anti virus is working. Or is it?
panic and danger are two different things and one does not always lead to
the other.
