Some do it because they are required to spend "x" amount of dollars a year

environment.

There are some developments of ways to trap the CO2 produced by the
companies. Check out http://www.sciam.com/1998/0198issue/0198infocus.html
on the act of carbon sequestration for all you enviro-nuts out there.

In the way of more sources for power, presenting the methane hydrate
crystal. Methane hydrates contain more energy than all other fossil fuels
combined, but they are difficult to get.

Then why do many governments support solar energy?

If you are talking about the largest 10-15 companies then you have to
understand that you may think of them as "Oil Companies" but in reality
they are energy companies. Most if not all of the large companies have
anywhere from 50 to over 300 companies under their main holding company.
You will find that most of them have ownership in hydroelectric, nuclear,
solar, wind, fussion research, etc. They do this for one main purpose.
To make money. They are in the buisness to provide energy.
Currently a large portion of the world uses hydrocarbons as a primary
source of energy. The majority of oil these days is not used as fuels and
lubricants as most people think but used for the making of synthetics.
These include all kinds of plastic (pvc, poly etc.) fibers (nylon, kevlar
etc.) fertilizers, and a host of other "wonder materials". They make a
lot more money on these items when calculated on per barrel basis then
selling you a gallon of gasoline or the power company Xcfm of gas.

Because they know god dammed well that PV is no threat to big oil or nukes
because they cost too much and put out even less energy, and they have a
finger in congress and tax write offs.

Oil companies have unattended electrical equipment at
remote well sites. Most descent wells are in the hell holes
of the world, Colombia, jungles of South America, Nigeria,
Lybia, and now Vietnam for example.
Put a Solar panel on it. Leave it for a year or so. Let it do
its' job. I wouldn't want to go back anytime soon!
