Some female prisoners in Scotland have revealed they feel threatened by
transgender inmates, with those who have suffered previous violence and
abuse being particularly vulnerable.

A study recorded the thoughts and feelings of female prisoners in their
own words, with research finding conflicting views held by women on the
inside.

The research by Dundee University academic Matthew Maycock was published
in the British Journal of Criminology and hit the headlines in January
when it was highlighted by women's rights campaigners.

However, further details from the academic paper reveal the way many of
Scotland's female prisoners feel about the trans debate in their own
words.

Dr Maycock interviewed 15 biological women prisoners in four Scottish
prisons before the start of the coronavirus pandemic in 2019. At the time,
there were around 400 female inmates in Scotland including 17 transgender
people.

Just over half of the respondents said they still viewed transgender women
as men and "consequently as a threat due to previous experiences of
violence and abuse".

One, called Ella, said a transgender inmate named Miriam had made her feel
uncomfortable by using "inappropriate language".

She said: "I’m not saying I’m a prude, but this person sat down, within
the first five minutes of meeting him, ‘oh aye, that 50 Shades of Grey,
that’s too timid, that’s too mild for me’. This is a big heavy man… he’s a
big intimidating man."

Another prisoner, Ellie, said: "If they’re maybe going through the change
and they’re on the hormones and that, but, like, she’s still got a f******
willy and all that, do you know what I mean."

Ellie also revealed that a transgender prisoner named Susan was in her
work party and claimed he had abused the system because "he wanted to have
sex with loads of lassies".

'She had a beard and a short back and sides'

Emily told Dr Maycock of a transgender prisoner who was still "acting like
a man", explaining: "Well, wait a minute, you’ve still got that strength
and whatever. You’re still acting like a man here. Like trying to get like
authority over you."

She went on to say some transgender inmates were simply putting on an
"act" to get into a women's jail, including some men serving time for sex
offences.

Emily said: "And this transgender had been telling the paedophiles, how to
get over to female jail, over to the female side. That is one thing I
won’t stick for, like, a beast to transgender. Don’t come over to a female
jail when you raped two lassies."

She added: "I feel like it was a bit of an act. Because she had a beard
and she didn’t try. She basically had a short back and sides and it was
just…she just looked awful. And she didn’t try cover up her…obviously her
down belows or anything like that."

The study also highlighted concerns that trans women were transitioning
back to males after their release, with Isla telling Dr Maycock that
female prisoners felt "hurt" when this happened.
