A bigamist convicted of murdering one of his two wives, then mutilating
her body and burying it in the Arizona desert, was sentenced Friday to
26 years to life in prison.
Sean Barclay Goff, 38, a former youth pastor, was convicted in July of
first-degree murder for fatally stabbing 25-year-old Joy Risker the
night of Sept. 19, 2003.
Risker was one of two women married to Goff, who confessed to the
murder in 2003.
Risker, Goff and Sheila Goff shared a home in San Diego. Risker and
Goff had two children together, and Goff had one child with Sheila
Goff.
Deputy District Attorney Matthew Greco said Goff had planned to kill
Risker for at least a year before her death and had talked to a friend
about a book called "How to Plan the Perfect Murder."
"The defendant was a calculated, cold-blooded murderer," Greco told the
judge.
Goff testified that he killed Risker after the couple had an argument,
but indicated it was partly an accident. He said she had appeared in
their bedroom with a knife and as he was trying wrestle the weapon from
her, he stabbed her, panicked and stabbed her again.
Figuring authorities wouldn't believe he killed Risker in self-defense,
Goff said he tried to cover up the crime scene by throwing away bloody
sheets and cutting off the victim's fingertips with a meat cleaver. He
said he used a saw to cut out Risker's teeth.
Goff said he loaded the victim's body into a plastic container, put it
in a rented SUV and drove to Arizona to dispose of the body in a remote
location in Maricopa County - near Sentinel, Ariz.
