A Massachusetts gym revoked a woman's membership after she broke
their rules on cellphone use. But the woman says she's owed an
apology.
A Massachusetts gym got all worked up over a woman's cellphone
workout.
Planet Fitness in Dedham, Mass., gave Tina Santoro Asmar the
boot for chatting on a cellphone while working out.
Asmar, 49, the owner of an Italian restaurant, said she got an
unexpected call from her doctor's office while working out on
the elliptical machine on Thursday. She told The Boston Herald
she didn't want to leave the workout area to take the call
because her iPad was plugged into the machine.
The gym's rules restrict cellphone use to the lobby, and posted
signs say yakking on a cellphone while working out is a no-no.
The gym revoked Asmar's membership.
Asma, of the Boston suburb of Westwood, said the gym's general
manager became "enraged" after she told him she'd be off the
phone in a minute. She isn't asking for her money back but said
she deserves an apology for the way she was treated.
"His demeanor was very threatening. I said, 'Oh, please, please
step away from me,' and he continued to say, 'No, I need you to
hang up that phone now or I�m going to cancel your membership,'"
Asmar told the Herald.
"Nex (sic) they will be saying I had a Madonna head set on!!!"
she posted on her Facebook page.
Club officials said it was Asmar who was belligerent and this
wasn't the first time she's violated the cellphone ban.
"Her reaction, when she was approached in a professional way,
was extremely unprofessional and rude and dismissive," club co-
owner Brian Kablik told the Herald.
Readers had little sympathy for Asmar. Ninety percent of the
more than 800 people responding to an online poll accompanying
the Herald story favored banning cellphone chatter in the gym,
while only 10 percent thought it was OK.
�You want to work out? Leave the phone in your car. Expecting a
call? Don�t go inside the gym with your phone,� reader M.
