An additional 95,188 coronavirus vaccine doses were administered in
Illinois on Monday, as statewide hospitalizations and the positivity rate
continue to creep up, public health officials reported.

The seven-day statewide positivity rate for cases as a share of total
tests — the positivity rate — is 3.9% as of Monday, the highest level
since the same rate was reported the week ending Feb. 1.

As of Sunday night, 1,648 people in Illinois were hospitalized with COVID-
19, with 357 patients in intensive care units and 143 patients on
ventilators. The seven-day average of total hospitalizations is 1,488, the
highest since an average of 1,512 was recorded Feb. 24.

In response to early signs of potential COVID-19 resurgence, the state is
deploying “rapid response vaccination teams” to six counties this week.

Teams will administer Johnson & Johnson’s single-dose vaccine to residents
in Fulton, Tazewell, Woodford and Jo Daviess counties. Additional vaccine
supply will also be provided to sites in Peoria and McLean counties.

Region 2, which includes five of the six counties, had a seven-day test
positivity rate of 6.7% as of April 3, 2.4 percentage points higher than
the statewide rate on that date. The region also had an ICU capacity of
21% as of April 5, 6% below the statewide level.

“Our rapid response vaccination teams will help counties mitigate early
signs of a possible resurgence of COVID-19 cases as we continue to get
vaccine to all eligible residents as quickly as possible,” Gov. J.B.
Pritzker said in a statement.

The state also announced an additional mass vaccination site at the Elgin
Eastside Recreation Center. The site will open Wednesday with the capacity
to administer 270 doses per day. All eligible Illinois residents
regardless of ZIP code will qualify at the site.

A total of 6,413,258 vaccinations have been administered statewide, with a
daily average of 106,976 over the last seven days, officials said Tuesday.

The number of residents who have been fully vaccinated — receiving both of
the required shots, or Johnson & Johnson’s single shot — reached
2,424,674, or 19.03% of the total population.

As of Tuesday, 40% of residents 16 and older have received at least one
dose of the coronavirus vaccine.

State health officials said that the federal partnership with Walgreens
and CVS Health to vaccinate residents and staff at long-term care
facilities “effectively has ended.”

Of the more than 8 million doses allocated to Illinois and Chicago to
date, nearly 450,000 were for the long-term care vaccination program.

Also Tuesday, officials reported 2,931 new confirmed and probable cases of
COVID-19 and 13 additional fatalities. The total number of known
infections in Illinois since the start of the pandemic is 1,261,667, and
the statewide death toll is 21,395.

The state on Sunday reported 83 additional cases of the coronavirus
variant first identified in the United Kingdom for a total of 471.

Officials also reported 33 additional cases of the variant first seen in
Brazil for a total of 77 and two additional cases of the variant first
seen in South Africa for a total of five. Officials previously identified
47 cases of the variant initially identified in California.
