Vivek Ramaswamy has long vowed to cut government spending and slash the
federal work force. On Sunday, he clarified how he'd do it if he's
elected in 2024 — informing government employees they'd lose their jobs
based on their social security number.

"On Day 1, *instantly* fire 50% of federal bureaucrats," Ramaswamy
posted on X. "Here’s how: if your SSN ends in an odd number, you’re
fired."

Ramaswamy argued this would cut the workforce by half and would not be
in violation of "civil service rules" because it would be qualified as a
"mass layoff."

It "doesn’t violate civil service rules because mass layoffs are
exempt," he wrote.

"This avoids civil service protections: no bureaucrat can claim their
firings were politically motivated," he wrote. "Further firings can be
executed with a chisel, but Step 1 needs to be an unrestrained chainsaw
or else it just won’t happen." He didn't address the wisdom of slashing
the workforce based on a random number assigned at birth instead of the
skill and value of a worker's contribution to the smooth working of a
system and the economy.
