HELP KEEP THE HOMELESS ALIVE THIS WINTER
VOLUNTEERS are being sought to help prevent homeless people
dying of cold on Poole streets this winter. Even in a normal
winter it is estimated that more than 25,000 people die
nationwide as a direct result of the cold. Now Poole outreach
support team is seeking help from residents to provide a
vital Severe Weather Emergency Provision service for
vulnerable people. This would provide emergency accommodation
for rough sleepers when the temperature drops below zero for
three consecutive nights or more.
A church hall will open its doors to homeless people on
freezing nights, offering shelter, a mattress, warm bedding
and a hot, nutritious meal. There will be support workers
available to talk to them and help them find a more permanent
solution to their problems and access the right services.
“Providing emergency accommodation in severe weather will
bring welcome relief to those sleeping rough and can mean the
difference between life and death,” said Cllr Peter Adams,
cabinet portfolio holder for housing and community services.
“The generous donations of residents both in money and time
help keep this vital service going and I hope these will
continue.” Sarah Ward, homelessness and substance misuse
manager for BCHA, specialist housing and social care support
provider, said: “BCHA are pleased to be working in partnership
with Borough of Poole and Routes to Roots to deliver this vital
service and ensure that no one is sleeping on the streets of
Poole if the temperature falls below zero this winter.”
She said: “SWEP provides a great opportunity for a number of
agencies to work together to stop rough sleeping in Poole.”
Volunteers are needed to make beds, heat and serve meals and
make people feel comfortable. Or people can donate money to
fund essentials such as mattresses, bedding and food by texting
BCHA04 the £ sign and amount, to 70070.

Agreed don however its remarkable that in the 21st Century there is
homelessness on the streets of the UK, you would have thought after
Dickens we might have moved on and ensured cheap housing for those
less fortunate or in 'Hard Times', despite the Rowntree Foundations
report in the 60s. Paints a bleak picture for the near future with
households on brink of repossesion and unemployment. Happy New Year
anyone?”
What is housing benefit, etc., for then? Many of these so-called
"homeless" have, by their additctions or anti-social behaviour, made
themselves homeless. Now, having squandered their own resources,
they call upon ours! What they need is not charity, as that enables
them to sustain their miserable lifestyles. They need discipline and
compulsory detention in an institution until they conform more
closely to society's norms. Living in the street, begging, drinking,
peeing in the bushes (and worse), acting anti-socially, is just not
an option. This is a free society, but not that free that one may
encroach upon the freedoms of others to walk the streets in peace.”

What world do you live in!
People become homeless for a variety of reasons, and you only get
housing benefit if you have somewhere to live! I have worked on
homeless projects before many on the streets are not addicts but
people like you and me that find themselves on the streets. You have
obviously never had any problems in life so please do not judge
others!”
