Police identified the 49-year-old man shot and killed near the east side
of the Hawthorne Bridge as Michael L. Hart.
Officers responded to reports of gunfire near Southeast Main Street and
Water Avenue just after 1:45 p.m. Dec. 6. They found Hart on the ground
and someone performing CPR when they arrived.
Wesley Allen, who said he is homeless and was living in the area, told The
Oregonian/OregonLive that he heard an argument between a group of people
and Hart, whom he knew as “Nomad.” Allen said he was inside his tent when
he heard two gunshots, and then saw a group of four run away from the
scene.
Hart was face down on the ground, Allen said. He and two others rushed to
his side and started CPR. Police arrived within 10 minutes, Allen said,
and an officer cut off Hart’s shirt to reveal two bullet holes. He died at
the scene.
Police have not made any arrests in the shooting.
Hart’s death marked the 70th homicide of 71 in Portland so far this year.
Last year, the city set a record for homicides with 101.
