why must people be mean spirited when talking about republicans? The art
show in question is offensive and is not art per say in my eye and
perhaps many other peoples eye. But it maybe art to someone. The mayor
and other people have the right to be offended and do everything in
their power to shut down this filth. On the other hand, this talentless
lout that made this trash has the right to try and display it.

Now, I know that "spelling flames" are out of favor here (unless they are
unintentionally funny) but the exact spelling of "WOP" is important to
understanding the origin and the deeper meaning behind this traditional
term...

More than 100 years ago, when Ellis Island was crammed with immigrants,
there were two overwhelmingly dominant groups: the Irish, and the Italians.
Almost all the Irish understood English, of course, and so they had a
reletively easy time of it with the Immigration 'crats. Most of the Irish
already had their visas in order, as well. The Italians, OTOH, were
language-impaired in comparison with their Emerald Isle fellows, and most
often had no documents in hand. The Immies would therefore have to use a
different procedure for those without visas, and, to facilitate the
separation of these from the other individuals with documents, they would
mark, with chalk, the letters "WOP" (for: "With Out Papers") on the
imiigrants' clothing.

The Irish, seeing this, assumed that this was the American word for
Italians, and it entered the popular lexicon, where it survives to this
day....

Have you seen the art?
And in what way is it offensive?

Filth? I's sure you have not seen it. I'll also bet that you do not
attend art galleries, study art or even own a single book at home by ANY
of the great masters.
But you are ready to condemn based on what you heard someone say.

The "talentless lout" won a $30,000 award for one of his art works and
his art hangs at the Tate Museum in London and the Museum of Modern Art
as well as the Brooklyn Museum.

Perhaps you are art ignorant and perhaps you shouldn't so easily piss
away your rights as an American to defend the First Ammendment to the
Constitution of the United States. Many Americans dies in numerous wars
in order to defend that right.

No American died to maintain Public Funding of filth.

And what is filth? Any person with an axe to grind in order to stop
Americans from viewing art work? The Soviet type censors who demanded
Art conform to "Soviet Realism"- oops "American Realism".

There was no problem with the art in the Brooklyn Museum or a problem
for the award winning artist using elephant dung as a medium in museums
at the Museum of Modern Art or the Tate Gallery in London. Guiliani
decided to censor that art work because HE decided that HE didn't like
it.

The American way is to let the American viewers decide if they want to
see art or simply not go. Not have some politically correct government
official ban it because HE doesn't like it.

So that Public Libraries- all subsidized- should be subject to
censorship boards or a mayor who will decide to pull books because HE
finds them offensive?

Are you willing to surrender cesnsorship by mayor Giuliani and give up
your own right to decide whether a work of art is good or bad, offensive
or interesting?
