On November 29, 1864, 700 Colorado 1st & 3rd Regiment troops
slaughtered over 160 Cheyenne and Arapaho people in the southeastern
Colorado Territory under the protection of the United States flag and a
white cloth of truce. This event became known as the Sand Creek
Massacre. In seven short hours, the Sand Creek Massacre changed the
course of American history.
The award-winning documentary short film (6:47), "The Sand Creek
Massacre", is in the running for the first prize of $10,000 in the
Haydenfilms
Film Festival. If it wins, the funds will be used to finish the
Sand Creek Massacre educational video that will be distributed in
schools to teach others, particularly, young people, about racism and
how to solve problems non-violently as told by the Cheyenne and
Arapaho people to preserve their oral histories.
