people who have work credits and have retired, or people who are
collecting the benefits of a dead spouse. SSI is not nearly as common.

Anton, receiving SSI means you don't have a suitable income or
assets to survive. That's why it's not the same as Social Security.
Even the funding for it comes from a different source.

How did you end up receiving SSI?

I was hit by a drunk driver when I was 22 and in college. I suffered
both a severe pelvic fracture and a TBI. My wife (who I met while I
was in the hosptal) and I both receive SSI. She is all but unable to
walk because of a subway accident when she was 18. By the kindness
of my brother, we live in the Crafsman home that my father assembled
many years ago. My brother charges us just enough rent for it to not
be a form of income or an asset. We receive state disability, which
in Connecticut is not a substantial amount. That qualifies us both
for SSI, since we are both disabled and unable to work.
