Anyone have any experience, or engineering opinions of Sam Martin pipes.

I've found one I'm interested in, and would appreciate any information.

Thanks

No complaints about the S.Martin I wound up with at CORPS '89 show.
Relatively thin lucite bit, a few tooth "scratches"...understandable.
Engineering spot-on, good for a long smoke. Not well balanced, but is
more a holder than clencher, so moot point. Go for it.

I have several and they are awesome. I have two of the "Hunter" series and
few more plain ones and they are great =smokers.
I think he married the daughter of the couple that make C&D tobacco.

You are thinking of Sam Learned. Sam Martin died in 1992.

Wow, I guess my age caught up with my IQ. You are correct. I do have three
Sam Martin pipes though and they do smoke really well. The pipes I have are
a bit on the heavier side and the rustication is heavy. The pipes seem like
they are well crafted but not particularly artistic.
Thanks Mike

Hi Mike, et al.

1) Thanks for the link!!! I hadn't run across the pipe wiki, and I'm
glad to find there is a central resource like this. It hasn't shown up
in any of my web searches, so hopefully it's still growing, and more of
our veteran pipers, tobacconists, etc. make contributions. I wish I had
the experience to help it out.

2) Yes it was Sam Martin. It's an unsmoked estate that I'm just
fascinated with. As a matter of fact, I just pulled the trigger on it a
little bit ago. (see:

Thanks for the comments EVERYONE!

Martin was was best known for his modern designs and top notch
stemwork. His pipes have achieved a bit of a cult status among a small
group of collectors. One issue that I always had with his work was the
way he shaped the bottom of a bowl. Nine times outta ten they were
very uneven. I believe this is partially so as he used mainly all hand
tools in his pipes production.

That's a nice-looking pipe! I would have lusted after that one if I
had seen it before you bought it.

I think it looks even better in person. Did you grab his cousin, the
light colored one?
