How do I make my own pipe?

Hi pipe smokers,

I'm just a new pipe smoker (I believe after 3 years pipe smoking it's
still
new, right? :))) and I do like it. Now I want to try make my own pipe.
Does anybody can help me find some Internet resources concerning the
subject?
I mean some tutorials, guides, help in choosing materials, tools, any
kind of howto.

I just picked up a copy of _Pipes_ magazine. They devote some time to
the topic of carving one's own pipes in this summer issue. It is
worth a look. It is available in large bookstores and probably many
tobacconists.

It is interesting that the huge Toronto Reference Library carries
absolutely nothing about pipes. I suspect an anti-smoking bias when I
can find much information about macrame (not that I want to) and
nothing about pipes. So you probably won't be able to get library
references.

He reprints (actually, pre-prints -- I think he had it first) the article
on pipe carving that appears in this quarter's Pipes magazine. I just
ordered a drilled block -- I'll put together an article on how it goes and
post it to my site.

I have to say, it really doesn't look that hard to make a pipe -- now,
making a beautiful pipe, that's a different story I'm sure. The kits can
be ordered pre-drilled, which helps if you don't have a drillpress or
small lathe. Once drilled, it seems to be like the old wooden boat kit
from Mad magazine -- take the block of wood, and remove everything that
doesn't look like a boat, or in this case, remove everything that doesn't
look like the pipe you want.

The article says that a Dremel or similar tool is helpful, and Mark Tinsky
posted elsewhere that a bandsaw helps for removing the large chunks of
non-pipe from the block.
