Have(or do) any of you guys smoked(smoke) a prince shape briar? I've
been looking at several old Dunhill prince shapes. I think these are
size 1 with a slight bend. What sort of smoking charactics do they
have? I usually prefer thick walled, full bend pipes, but these old
Dunhills look pretty neat!

Princes are really nice to smoke. You do have to be careful with the 1/8
bent ones, as they tend to droop and spill ash if you're working while
smoking.

The bowl of the prince tends to have a higher ratio of diameter to depth,
than billiards and so on, so larger examples begin to smoke like small
pots. A group 1, though, is quite a small pipe. Given the shallow bowl,
I'd say it would be a fairly short smoke! Great pipes for stronger flakes
(at least for those of us with less than legendary nicotine tolerance!).

Personally, I think it's a wonderful shape, but a lot of people don't
find their appeal. To each his own.

I have a patent number Dunhill Prince. It is a really nice pipe, a Root.
It smokes very nice. I would put it about group 3 or a small 4, perfect for
me.

Kenneth,

The Dunhill Prince is one of the most beautiul, classic and elegant shape
I've ever know. Perfect to smoke Flake tobaccos. But it's rather a small
size pipe, especially a Dunhill size one (did you got it in your hands or
just seen pictures of the pipe ?).IMHO, a Prince size one is a doll's pipe.
You couldn't enjoy the taste variations of a tobacco in it, you will just
get a first impression in a ten minutes smoke.
If you like the Prine shape, you better take a size 2 or 3.
I know you can find some of them (new ones) on the website
http://www.aab-taxfreepipes.com (in groups 2 and 3) and on the Al Pascia
site : http://www.alpascia.com (in groups 3 and 4). I'm a good customer of
them and I can highly recommend both of them. On Al Pascia website, you will
see a superb and very rare Shell Briar Prince with a bamboo extension at a
more than affordable price (225.00 Euros/dollars). My God! what a masochist
I am to give you that tip !
Regards.

I have several princes that I find to be excellent Virginia flake smokers. Two
are Dunhills, older and small in bore, one's a Blatter, also group 1 in size,
and 2 others are old Hardcastle's. All smoke my favored flakes very well. I
don't think you will be dissapointed at all. Just as a side note, they are
fairly short duration smokes, 30-40 minutes, due to their smaller size.

Thanks for your imput Greg and Charles. I just ordered a Dunhill FE
F/T Root. I don't know anything about Dunhill nomenclature, but the
pictures looked nice. Looks to be about 6" plus. Not sure about bowl
cap. Can't wait to try it out!

Thanks,
Ken

The FE is a classic prince. There was also an FET, which had a straight
stem. The F/T stands for fishtail, which indicates a flared mouthpiece -
my personal fave. It'll be a great pipe!

Hi Ken,

A group 4 shell prince was my very first Dunhill. It smoked like a
dream from the very beginning, and is still one of my favorites.

Smoking characteristics? Well, very very cool for starters. Even
though the bowl isn't as thick-walled as some of my Cavicchis, it
produces the same level of coolness. Also, the relatively long shank
and stem helps to keep the smoke away further away from the face, which
(oddly enough) enables you to enjoy the aroma of the burning tobacco a
bit better.

Cheers, Mark

Yes, I have one prince that for some reason I have reserved for my "Cross
Eyed-Cricket".......because of it's smaller size, it just seems right for a
blend like "Cricket"........ I enjoy a shorter smoke with any aromatic
blend........if I go for a longer haul I use a Tinsky freehand or one of my
bigger Petersons and an English blend........

I have a prince or two... or 29 of 'em. They represent over half my collection
and are a focus of it. I love the shape. They make great flake smokers, and are
quite elegant. Oddly enough I don't own a single Dunhill prince. Still, I
consider the 407 the "standard" for slightly bent princes. I really like the way
Dunhill has the classic short, thick-walled bowl with a pencil shank. I'll own
lots of Dunnie princes one of these days; I've just been waiting on a 1970 to
start. I have never seen a 1970 Dunhill prince. Not sure why.

As GLP has noted, the prince is really a variant of the apple shape. It's just
(generally) longer and has a more "squashed", shallower bowl.

Dear Kenneth
I smoke and collect princes , a couple of Dunhill size four , a
Ferndown , a Peterson , Castlford , a Brebbia , a Becker-Musico , a
couple of old Comoy deluxes straight grains , About a dozen Savinellis
GGs and Punto Oros and sea coral , plus a few more of varied pedigrees
. They are an elegant medium smoke shape lasting from 30 to 40 minutes
. Perfect pipe to carry to formal occassion ( dinners or lunches )
when and where the larger , heavier , and longer smoke pipes would be
out of place , and a short over coffee smoke is preferable .
As for what to smoke in a prince , well that would be entirely up to
you .
I personally would recommend a Savinelli prince .Good luck

Hello Kenneth and all,

the prince shape is one of my favorites, for some reason. Comoy's,
BBB, Becker, Hardcastle, Upshall etc.
Easy to smoke to the bottom, thick walls but not heavy, no wet dottle,
compact size and I reeally like the classic prince shape.
Dunhill's take on the prince shape is very nice, also.

I'm going to try to post a link to a picture of the pipe. I may be
wrong about the group size, so I'm posting info engraved onto the
pipe. The picture is at:
http://home.earthlink.net/~scottlr/fs/dunfeft.JPG

The pipe is listed as"FE F/T Dunhill Root Briar made in England 9 (4)
R."
The 4 is inside a circle.

As you can see the pipe has seen a bit of use, but there should still
be plenty of use left in it. Thanks for all your responses.

Kenneth -
The other posts seemed to hit it perfectly. I have one large and one
small bowled prince. The small one is a petersen 4th of July pipe
which has beautiful lines as do all princes imo. I think it is a
shape that "looks like a pipe should look." However, I also find that
the smaller bowls are very small because of the taller thinner nature
of a prince bowl. Additionally, the 4th of July prince shape I have
possesses a p-lip and that in combination with the curve of the stem
makes insertion of a pipe cleaner a bit of a challenge. Especially
when its day in the rotation and time of use, catches me on the
freeway, in traffic, trying to insert a pipe cleaner, while reaching
for my pager and adjusting the radio station while looking for my cell
phone in the center console. Anyway, you get the picture. Beautiful
design, but curved stem can increase your blood pressure and smaller
bowl can lead to sucking in some ash as you find yourself "jonesin"
for one last satisfying inhale.
