Douge-Egberts (the Amphora manufacturer) was owned by Sara Lee (that's
right - the baker- of all companies). They sold the brand to Imperial
Tobacco (I think) in the U.K., who decided to no longer import to the
U.S. Litigation, and all that......
There is a new tobacco on the market by Skandinavik (again, I think)
which is a Stokebye blend. I don't remember the product name, but when
you see the package you will instantly recognize Amphora red (full)
and brown (natural). I haven't tried them, but I understand they are
based on the same blend.
Amphora is still available in Europe. Probably not at a price most
former Ampora smokers would still be willing to pay.

In my quest for the perfect tobacco, I have tried both Skandinavik Brown and
Red. I have also tried Amphora (there is still some locally). Amphora to me
is more like a refined version of Prince Albert with a mild fruity perfume .
Skandinavik Natural is somewhat like Half and Half in flavor, not as wet
smoking, and seems to be unflavored mostly.. Skandinavik Full Aroma is similar
to a lot of those Peter Stokkebye bulk blends, aromatic, yet not syrupy or wet
smoking like most Lane blends. The flavor is similar to Amphora, maybe heavier
and sweeter.
If one couldn't find any decent bulk aromatics or Virginia-burley around
town or online ordering was prohibitive, Skandinavik would probably be a good
choice.

Hello all
Here in the Netherlands , the country where the firm that makes Amphora is
settled, Amphora is everywhere widely available at the normal retail price. We
don't know anything here of sold companies. Douwe Egberts is still up and running
very well. Bye

Here in Italy Amphora is available too, and is one of the most used tobaccos. It is
not expensive at all for the italian standards.
(If someone cares, the 10 most sold tabaccos in Italy last year were: Clan Aromatic,
5 different kinds of Amphora, Skandinavik Mixture, Borkum Riff Whiskey, Mac Baren
Mixture, Park Lane n. 7.)

I'm now enjoying a Gawith blend, and sipping a "Douwe Egbert's" unique coffee
blend (my mother just visited with me from the Old Country...).
Greed? Marketing? ???
Just puff!

does italy produce quality tobacco of their own? And if so: what brands and
do you know any online sources?

Some of you may recall, before my access to this fine NG was so rudely
interrupted, that my old standby was AMPHORA REGULAR. Well, like Chicken
Little and the proverbial falling sky, I rushed around buying up all of
the stuff I could find, on the basis of the information that soon it
would no longer be available.
No sooner than I had spent more money than was prudent, AMPHORA REGULAR
began appearing in stores locally that formerly had not carried it...
there is more AMPHORA REGULAR around here now than there ever was. Not
only that, I found a can in one store with newly designed packaging (NOT
the version put out by Skandanavik or whoever it was, under their name
in similar packaging.)
I know this proves nothing, other than the possible fact that our local
retailers are taking advantage of wholesale bargains on AMPHORA REGULAR
(curiously, no other varieties of Amphora appear.) BUT... the new
packaging I saw the other day makes me wonder what the hell is really
going on.
Not only that, but in the meantime, I've gone off the AMPHORA REGULAR in
favor of ORLIK GOLDEN SLICED, PENZANCE, and MAC BAREN PLUMCAKE.
What, if anything, can we learn from this, other than the fact that I
feel foolish for panicking?
Best to all,
M. Crane
I don't think you have any reason to "feel foolish". If Amphora had really
gone away, you'd be quite happy right now. Indeed, you'd be feeling quite
wise for having purchased a bulk quantity. But even if it doesn't go away,
you now have a nice supply to guard against a "rainy day", a time when your
money supply may not equal your tobacco appetite.
Finally, if nothing else you can look at it as a hedge against inflation.
Tobacco prices can only go up, so every tin you buy now will save you money
when the prices to rise. I've begun stocking up on some my favorites
(Dorchester for one) as a guard against inflation, lack of availability, and
just in case that "rainy day" I mentioned ever comes about.
