First a little background on me, as this is my first post. I've been
smoking a pipe for almost exactly three years. I'm originally from the
U.S., but have lived in Europe for some years now. Right now I'm
dividing my time between Helsinki, Finland and Cluj-Napoca,
Romania. Neither city seems to have any pipe-smoking society. I
suppose that in Romania the price of even drugstore tobacco is
prohibitively high for the locals, while in Helsinki the issue could
be the fact that Finns are just rather unsociable in general combined
with strong public attitudes against smoking.

Anyway, in March I'll find myself in Denmark for a long weekend. I'll
be going there for a concert in Odense, but the unusually frequent
mention of Denmark here as well as the presence of Danish posters
tells me I should take advantage of pipe possibilities during my
trip. What are the must-visit tobacconists in the country? Where is
smoking permitted? Do any pipe clubs there have regular meetings?

Can't tell you anything about Denmark, but it's always nice to see a new poster.
Welcome!

I'd swing by Former and Eltang's shop while you're there- both have
websites you can get information on location from: www.eltang.com and
www.formerpipes.com.

Good luck,

Hi Christopher,

You should look up Jari T! He's a regular poster who lives in Helsinki.

I think he lives in a disreputable part of town. He once posted links to
photos of the view from his apartment, and you could see something like 11
bars down the block.

Anyway, he seems like a very nice fellow, even though he gets tipsy now and
then.

He also sometimes posts links to these Indian movies with English subtitles
that make fun of me.

If you're coming to Denmark, I would certainly advise you to come visit
Copenhagen.

Here we have two great tobacco stores, namely:
Poul Hansen Piber on Stroeget near the city square.
Paul Olsen MyOwnBlend on Christian d. IX's gade near Folkets Park.

I live in Malmoe nowadays, but work in Copenhagen, so if you happen to stop
by Copenhagen, you should feel welcome to throw me a line. I'd be happy to
show you both shops, and it's always nice to share a bowl or two with an
ASPer.

Smoking laws have been tightened even further in Denmark as of 1/1/2007,
resulting in the banning of smoking in all public buildings (restaurants,
bars, whatever). However if the place is less than 40 square meters in size,
the owner can allow smoking indoors. Everybody else has to build an off-site
facility for smokers (yeah, like that's going to happen in the inner parts
of Copenhagen where square footage is pricier than gold).

So, there you have it :)

Welcome Christopher!

Rad - what on earth is disreputable about an area that has 11 bars in
eyesight?
Sounds wonderful!

Dear Christopher,

nice to hear that you are going to Denmark. If only you had gone there
2 years ago, you could have had the chance to visit the absolute MUST
of all pipe shops in Copenhagen: The famous W.Ø. Larsen shop. I worked
there as the tobacco master, but the shop closed down for good in March
2005. Anyway, as Lars says, you could visit "Poul Hansen" (rund by Mr.
Steffen Nielsen) in the main shopping street "Strøget" (the part of it
called Frederiksberggade, very close to the Town Hall Square
"Rådhuspladsen") and/or you could go to "Paul Olsen" and visit the "My
Own Blend" store. In that case, give my regards to Mr. Michael
Mortensen who runs the daily business there.

I noted that you go to Odense! In that case, you should go to "Lottrups
Gård" (at the end of the main shopping street in the centre, ask for
directions!) and visit the pipe shop run by Mr. Mogens Thomsen. He is a
very friendly guy, and if you visit that store, PLEASE give my regards
to Mogens, Jane and Mary. They are all such lovely persons!

Best,

Bo

Welcome to asp, Christopher.

There is no pipe smoking society here where I live in S.E. Ohio. Asp
serves as my pipe smoking society, it can be the same for you. I seldom
see another pipe smoker. I do know of one other guy, however, I see him
once in a great while.

Hi Christopher, welcome to ASP!

Give me shout when in Helsinki and we'll have a bowl or two.

Cheers!

Rad, I moved. Much healthier neighborhood now.

I admit that. But I only do because you seem to be a kind of guy that
can take a little well meaning tease....

Jari,

That is the best one yet!

I only hope Mr. Tinsky sees it. You have captured the essence of our
relationship on film. :o)

Thank you Rad, I'm glad you liked it!

Yea, let's hope Mr. Tinsky will have time to watch it...
