Tonight I am tackling an enigma....I am once again puffing away at my Bartlett Sparta. (thats right kids....the upside down pipe)

For the first time I think I understand the workings and function of said pipe!

Anybody here had the pleasure of smoking one of these devils?

Hey Max...when I was young and stupid....and many would say I still
am...I bought a upside down pipe....now up to that point all I tried
were cobs...and wanted to upgrade....your post reminded me of this pipe
as I had not thought of it in years...the thing almost made me give up
on pipes and go back to only cigars....so I dug it out and sure enouf it
is a Hirshan model from the Bartlett Pipe Company....BTW....got your
baccy today....thanks....gonna try it soon but the wife loves the bag
aroma....if you figure that pipe out and want another...:)

It is a tasty tobacco... in those days when I was still matrimonially inclined, and more concerned with tobaccos that had agreeable room aromas...I would have kept it! Now as a single man I find myself more inclined to be enveloped in the malodorous fumes of latikia and disreputable perique blends!!

As for the Bartlett... it is actually behaving. The initial light is a bugger, but it smokes well once truly lit. It does live up to its reputation.. it is an amazingly dry smoke!

It seems the secret is doing an upside down pack...tight at the bottom and slightly looser at the top. Then rapping it in my palm occasionally to pack the tobacco down towards the burning end!!

Wow, didn't think anybody actually smoked those things! Good stuff.

I heard that back during WWII, many pipesters smoked their pipes upside down while out and about at night due to blackout restrictions, etc. especially in and around London. Never tried it myself, but maybe I will grab one of my old Ben Wades from that period and give it a shot!
