Which does raise the interesting question, if someone complains about
your smoking because the second-hand carcinogens from the tobacco are
poisoning them to death, does that mean we could smoke herbal mixes
freely? No harmful studies on those, so we couldn't be accused of
harming others through our evil smoke, right? (Note - Tongue is
slightly, but only slightly, in cheek...)

Now ain't this a co-inkydink... As per Austin's earlier post, (Stephen
Frey, Pipe Smoker) the British comic actor/writer and Pipe Smoker of
the Year for 2003, Stephen Frey, mentioned that he started smoking as a
child when he would smoke tea from one of his father's pipes.
I also note that Paul Simon referenced the practice in his A Simple
Desultory Philippic: "And I learned the truth from Lenny Bruce, And all
my wealth won't buy me health, So I smoke a pint of tea a day. I knew a
man, his brain so small..." Of course, I'd always assumed that he
wasn't speaking of tea, but rather "tea." If you get my meaning.
Dave's not here, man.

I mentioned in another thread that it's not the vegetable matter
itself that's carcinogenic, but the smoke. So I'm sure people would
still be upset if you were smoking ginseng or something, not to
mention that ginseng cigarettes smell exactly like pot.

OK, I *know* we're all waiting for this story now....! ;)
Reminds me of the time I bought an inexpensive meer on E-Bay which had
obviously used to smoke cannabis. It had a screen in the bottom of the
bowl and that unmistakable odor of the herb.I sent it back and was
reimbursed, seems like I remember smoking pot in an old Sav many years
ago,it ruined that pipe.Nothing is so tarry as pot.

I was in the Navy, stationed in Adak, Alaska, in 1971-72, and everyone
(unless you were a petty officer) in the weather office where I worked had
to spend a month being a mess cook in the dining hall. Sort of a "your turn
in the barrel" thing. Basically every division had to supply someone to the
kitchen to do the cleaning up and dishwashing.
One day we were cleaning up the tables and we all smelled that very
disinctive smell of burning pot. Everyone's looking around to see who has
the balls to be smoking dope in the mess decks, I mean the smell wasn't just
a whiff now & then. You could actually see some smoke drifting around.
Turns out some smartass had taken one of the Lipton teabags that sit out on
the tables and set it on fire in an ashtray (they still had 'em on the
tables back then).
Very distinct odor.

I was chatting with someone by email a day ago, and he casually
mentioned that he had started out by smoking Earl Grey tea in his pipe.
This made me blink, to say the least! Has anyone else ever done
this?
I dunno... I drink Earl Grey every morning. I buy the
brand (TAO) that reeks of bergamont. If you like, I can
save up the used ones and send some to you as a
trial run for the newer ones so you're not out any coin.

I have an old Zippo engraved from the Hammerhead Lodge in Adak...any idea
what that was?

Earl Grey is my favorite Tea. That said, I don't think I would smoke it.
It is meant for brewing, and is perfect that way, IMO.

don't know if you can get high from it.

Cheers !!
Hi Andrew,
I don't remember a Hammerhead Lodge when I was there, but I did find a
reference to it in Google. Someone had a list of slides from 1948 (no
actual photos to look at) that referred to the Navy Club as Hammerhead
lodge.
The only thing on Adak was the Naval Air Station, so it would have to be a
navy club of some sort.
Anything there in 1948 was probably long gone by the time I got there in the
early 70's.

Hops are in the Cannabaceae family, the same family as marijuana. Dunno
what the effects of smoking it would be, but ... if he enjoyed it, who
who cares? Smoke what you like.
