Can someone explain how the Dunhill seconds come about, and the
difference in Parker and Hardcastle?

For instance, does a pipe that starts out a Dunhill turn into a
Hardcastle if a flaw is found, or does pre-screened briar just get
shoved to the hardcastle basket? What about Parker?

I would also like to know the answer to Dennis's question. It would be some
interesting history.

Are Parkers and Hardcastles still made?
If they are still in production, is there now any association with the Dunhill
company?

Since Dunhill no longer makes its own pipes, is it even possible to have
contemporary Dunhill seconds?

Jack,

Parkers and Hardcastles are still made, as separate brands. Novelli in
Italy has a large selection of Parkers:
http://www.novelli.it/indexpipe.htm

I havn't seen them elsewhere, though, except for an ad in P&T Magazine.
James Norman is the American distributor for Parker and for Hardcastle.

Dear Hans,

Thank you. That is useful information.

At least we have it confirmed that these brands are no longer Dunhill seconds.

Can anyone answer the question from the historical perspective? When these
brands were Dunhill seconds, at what point in the manufacturing process did
they become designated as seconds?

Thank you all.

Dennis, I asked the same question in December. James Beard gave an
excellent response that can be found at:

David,

Doh

Thanks. I usually search the archives before I post a request for
info, and I've shown short patience with others that don't bother to
search the archives first before asking a question. I'm embarrased.

Hope it gave you the information you needed. My intent was to direct you to
a source, not to chastise you for not searching..hope I didn't come across
that way.

Enjoy.

Jack,

Loring goes into a bit of description about this, as does Hacker in at
least "Rare Smoke". If memory serves, it really depends on the era
you're discussing. I think there was a certain period where Dunhill
dropped their seconds off with either Parker or Hardcastle, but the
relationship changed at some point.

I don't recall the particulars to any greater degree, but I do know
that it's addressed in both books.
