1) A 1968 Root Briar Tapered Bull with a diamond shaft. The markings are
147 F/T (or perhaps it is 47 F/T) 4 R. It has a beautiful densely packed
parallel grain with end grain on either side of the bowl. I think this was
an unusual/uncommon style when I bought it.
2) A 1968 Root Briar Bent 56 F/T 4 R. It has a similar grain pattern to #1.
This one was hardly smoked.
3) A 1966 Tanshell 59 F/T 4 T. This is either a Billard or Topper, I am not
sure which.. This was a great smoking pipe (although so are the others).
The grain pattern is also similar to #1.
4) A 1964 Tanshell Bent 53 F/T 3 T. The grain on this runs parallel to the
bowl with end grain on the bottom and top of the bowl.
Anyone have any ideas what these are worth?
I'm a Charatan man, not a Dunhill man, but...
Here are two option sets:
First, watch ebay for a month or two. Chart the values of Dunhills migrating
through the auctions. That will give you some idea of what the market is
bearing.
Second, make an arrangement with someone who sells estate pipes out on the
internet ... here I can give your five names, based on where you live:
West Coast. Marty Pulvers, of www.pulverspriorbriar.com
Fly-over Country (midwest). Scott and Ray of R&E pipes, www.re-pipes.com
Fly over country (Ohio). Jay and Louise of www.pipestyle.com
Southeast: Glenn Brooks of www.recollect.com
Northeast: Carole Burns of www.vtpipes.com
I've dealt with all of them; they are all reputable :)
If you choose ebay, two-three high quality scans of each pipe (including the
nomenclature), a reasonable starting price (say $20) and a reasonable reserve
are essential. Equally essential is a good description, but the Chinese adage
applies. Finally, too many people try to sell a pipe with an opening bid call
set at 200 or so. Doesn't work.
That's my $0.02. Your mileage may vary.
Smoke in peace, John

Robert,
The prices you would get will range all over the board and vary by the day!
Dunhill prices are fickle!
