The other thing that gets me is shipping!
Here I find a nice pipe...price is decent...and just as I am about to place a bid... I glance down and see "Shipping $12.95". Goes into my no thank you column.
The ironic part is...the few times I've paid that shipping....the pipe shows up 10 days later in an old padded envelope, with $2 worth of shipping on it.

And suddenly it strikes me I just paid $10 for the privilege of buying a pipe!`

Yup, shipping costs have been a deal-breaker for me as soon as I got smart enough to check 'em
out before pulling the trigger. With flat-rate USPS Priority, there's no excuse for trying to
get your profit inflated with shipping costs.

Agreed. No reason to be charged more than $5 for domestic shipping. Of course, with the recent rate hike in the UK, shipping has become quite expensive, esp. when looking for those old Barlings, Sasienis, and Dunnies!!

I'll factor the shipping into what I'm willing to spend on the pipe.
If I were to bid on a $200 pipe (which I ain't) $12.00 wouldn't be a
deal breaker, sour as that is. For my price range ($30 - 60) I expect
to pay around $6.00.
But, that's just me!

That kind of thing isn't limited to eBay. But yeah, it's pretty annoying.

What gets me are the ones that charge a separate "Handling Fee", the actual
postage, the cost of the gas used to drive to (and from) the post office,
plus an inflated "Shipping" charge...that happened to me years ago on an
Ebay auction I won. The guy e-mailed me after the auction with the list of
additional charges (Went from $10 shipping to $36 total before the cost of
the pipe) and I told him what to do with them. It was my only negative
review but was well worth it (I wrote on his feedback for people to email me
for details). He's no longer on EBay.

It's not just on ebay.

I once attempted to order tobacco online from a retailer I'd never
used before, or since.

They wanted to charge me $42 US postage and handling to post 2 x 1.5
once pouches of Carter Hall from the US to Australia!

Was that USPS or e.g. FedEx or UPS? Both of the latter charge
roughly $30 for putting something through customs & excise, even
if nothing has to be paid.

If USPS, that would be a rip-off. International small box flat
rate (up to 4 pounds) to Australia costs $23.95, and I have never
been charged by USPS for customs & excise handling (which I think
is taken care of at the other end, by the receiver, at his expense).

Cheers!
