Greeting Gentlefolk. What's your cheapest pipe that smokes as well as
your high grades? Mine is a Comoy's Monaco I picked up for $20 that
smokes flake as spicy as anything I own. May your pipes be ever sweet.

A non-descript now "yard" lg. bowl full bent from a long gone B&M near
Denver. Only markings "theChurchwarden". Anybody remember George
O'Belmito? Replacement lucite stem that is held to the shank via
electrical tape. Not afraid to light it with a Zippo & occasionally
just scrape off the "rim buildup" with old Sheffield pipe knife. Take
it apart & clean it when it lets me know "it's time". Nice capacity
for about an hour of yard work, mowing etc. George told me it was
probably a Parker 2nd, which would make it a "3rd". Paid around $15
for the beast......new in '64.

I have a Ben Howard Bulldog which smokes quite nice. I don't know if I
would say it smokes as good as one of my higher graded pipes but it
certainly is far above it's class.

Mine is a "wall"(AKA basket) pipe I picked up over 50 years ago at the
old Druquers in Berkeley when I was a freshman at Cal. If I remember
correctly, it was $3.95. It still smokes great. It's a nice little
Walford blast billiard with a silver ring. Greg Pease couldn't give me
any more info on it except that it was a standard pipe at that store
(where he learned his blending skills).

Ok Piper,
I smoke a non-discript Grabo purchased in a drug store while on my way
to a fishing trip to Santee Cooper Lakes in SC about 1968. Still
smokes very well and I did catch fish while smoking this pipe. :>)

A few years ago Stanwell's were selling for under $10 on ebay. Some from the
60's were hand made probably by famous people and have vulcanite stems but
hold up very well as I do not chew on the stems. I have a very nice
collection of these pipes and most are excellent. I have around 225 of them
and smoke almost 100 regularly. They get plenty of rest!!!

A no name bent billiard "basket pipe" that I've had forever. It never
fails to please.

I have several that I received along with a nice pipe rack. Traded about
$20 worth of cigars for them. And one expensive pipe that was a freebe. I
have truly been fortunate.

I really don't have an "expensive" pipe, although I do have several "estate"
pipes that were originally high priced.

A Peretti "bull moose" that I bought back in '68(?) on a trip to Boston to see
my girlfriend. I thought the gold band was classy, but the pipe still smokes
wonderfully. Can't remember what I paid, but I'd guess under $30.
Also have 3 Comoys that I got as part of a group buy, which makes 'em under $5
each, and after cleaning they smoke really well, except they're a little small.

My best smoking inexpensive pipe would be a Sav natural with 4 pencil
eraser sized fills and remarkably unremarkable grain. Next would be
cobs, oh, and 5 or 6 Guildhalls that I got on ebay for under $20 each.
One of my worst smoking pipes is a Comoy from 1938 that ends up with a
drenched bowl no matter how long I let it rest and no matter what I burn
in it. Can't figure it out.

champ with my English blends. Runner up would be a Savinelli Duca
Carlo that I paid about $35 for several years ago. It's my main
aromatic pipe and smokes wonderfully.

I don't have any high-grade pipes, but an older Kaywoodie billiard in
my collection seems to smoke as well as any of my mid-range pipes.
Very good value really.

IMO, there is little connection between the cost of a pipe and its
smoking quality.

There IS a connection between cost and the cosmetics - how nice the
pipe looks.

There IS kind of a "statistical" connection between price and smoking
quality - I own a lot of Dunhills and Castellos -I would say all or
almost all of them are nice smokers.

I would also say that most, but a lower percentage, of my cheap basket
pipes are good smokers... meaning I am more likely to get a pipe that
I like less. But still most are fine.

But even at the low end, some brands, for example Stanwell, and Bjarne
(alas, gone, and RIP) were almost always nicely constructed and good
smoking pipes. Hardly el-cheapo basked pipes, but a lot less $$ than
Dunhill or Castello.

Thus proving, in the end, that every pipe is unique, and every
combination of tobacco and pipe is a unique experience.

Which is part of what makes pipe smoking an interesting and engaging
hobby, not just a habit.

eBay would disagree. The current lot of PS'ds is running from $49 to
$105. If you find one under $39 I'd like to have a crack at
it! :-]

Probably an Italian gnarly bent bulldog called a Rhino Scultura, or
something like that. I paid $17.50 for it and it consistently
provides a fantastic smoke.

The first pipe I bought in 1996 was $19, an "Imported Briar" natural
Dublin basket pipe,...nothing else. This thing smokes VA's and VaPer's
like a dream, never lets me down.
Another good buy, on eBay, was 5 Belmont "Style Kings". They are about
a size 3, but smoke cool, even, and dry. They are great for a short
smoke, to test something out, or with a blend that is is old and short
supply. Nothing like a Belmont!!

As an "estate" pipe buyer, all my pipes would qualify in one sense,
for I don't spend much on any of them. But the most pleasant surprise
among pipes that were originally "cheap" when new, and a downright
steal when I purchased them were a selection of 5 Amphora pipes. They
cost me $10.00 and came with a 6 place pipe stand, which works out at
$2 each, and they all smoke spendidly. And I have a Hardcastle which
is an almost exact duplicate of one of my Dunhills, other than two
very tiny fills, and smokes equally well. And the most I have ever
paid for a Dunhill is $30. I did splurge and buy an exquisite Karl
Erik egg which I paid $50 dollars for, but that was in a moment of
madness while on holiday.
