Echo Ken's message above. I had a "sneaking suspision" that all was not
well with Jack. Yes, he will be sorely missed.

My closest recollection of Jack was at the Barry Levin Pipe Expo near
Boston in '87. He was the MC and I backed him up on fiddle as he went
thru the best of his off-color sea chanties. A great man and a
wonderful representative of our great hobby. Condolences to his family.

This is really ironic, as I just put up a post tonight asking if anyone
had heard any news. I never had the pleasure of meeting Jack in person
and I really regret that, he sounded like such an interesting guy. Like
all of you, I enjoyed his morning watch posts and always awaited them
on the nights when I couldn't sleep. His pain is over now and he is
resting in a place where there are always fair winds and full bowls.

This is very sad news. It was only a couple weeks ago that I spoke with
him for the last time. I should have known things were more serious than
he let on; he didn't say a word about the nurses.

I first met Jack about 25 years ago at a pipe show in San Francisco. I
teased him about his ridiculous tiny guitar - he teased me about my hair,
which was well past my shoulders in those days. His bawdy sea chanties
were as much fun as his casual and easy banter. But, it was in serious
conversation when he shined brightest. He was a deep fellow. We agreed
and disagreed about many things, but always in a gentlemanly and friendly
manner. And, though he quit drinking some years ago, he still enjoyed
talking about the perfect martini.

I've been meaning to call over the past several days, and now, I can not.
In the morning, in his honour, I shall have peanut butter in my coffee,
and add some chopped up cigar leaf to my pipe for my first smoke.

Farewell old friend, and fair winds. I will miss you.

It was my privelege to meet Jack but a couple of times since he came to
Columbus and I share in the sadness we are all expressing. Please
Please post the funeral arrangements. I will take a cab to get there is
I have to. The world is a better place for his life, and a darker place
with his passing; Yet the things I learned from him and remembering our
conversations bring me some solace. It is hard for me to believe that
after just the couple of times chatting with him real tears are coming
at this news. I am sure he is in a comfortable chair with an ottoman
puffing and enjoying his coffee and peanut butter even as we speak.

I'll not smoke again until lighting up in his honor at his funeral if I
can get there. Thanks Premal.

I, too, will speak reverentially of the Sailorman and mourn his
passing. I only had the good fortune to meet him once, at the NYC show
in June 2002. He told me that, for him, there were no strangers, only
friends he hadn't met yet. The other day, on another site, the
discussion ranged on the question of what is a "gentleman". Clearly, I
should have noted the Sailorman as a model of the term. He was a
gentle man. He will be missed.

My wife has never met the man but knows who he is from my observations

Sad news, indeed. Jack was a great friend and a wonderful man. I
enjoyed the time I had spent with him over the years at NYC Tobacco
shops and many Pipe Shows. He embraced my family and I whenever we had
the opportunity to see him. He never failed to ask how my wife and
children were whenever I saw him. He will be missed dearly.

I first met aJack back in the mid 1980s at Elliot Nachwalter's shop on
West 55th STreet; he told me there was a New York Pipe Club and invited
me to attend. One thing led to another and I never did make a meeting.

Then, I was reading P&T in the winter of 2001 and saw the listing of
the New York Pipe Club and called Jack the last weekend of April; we
must have spoken for nearly an hour....and I reminded him of when we
met in Elliot's shop (probably 14 years earlier) which he sort of
remembered. We also talked of Elliot's departed father Seymour, easily
one of the greatest folks that ever lived.

Two days later, the first Tuesday of April in 2001, I attended my first
NY Pipe Club meeting. Had a ball; the Club was pretty sparsely
attended at that point, but it was fun.

Jack had started the Club many years earlier and was President.
Ultiamtely, Jack stepped down and from March 2004 through September
2005 (until family obligations commandeered my time) I was president of
the club. Big shoes and a big legacy to fill.

Rest in peace, Sailorman.

I've dug deep down in a tupperware container of odds and ends of old
samples to find a small end of a baggie of C&D's "Billy Bud". One last
bowl left, imagine that. This is my morning smoke and it's dedicated to
Sailorman Jack.

Now I will go to The Columbus Dispatch site to see if there is an
obituary.

My next bowl in Jack's honor later tonight. Hell, I may actually try that

times.

Jack was truly a "one off" and I've never met anyone like him and
likely never will again. The last time I saw him it was at a New York
pipe show last year.He proudly handed me a Smoker's Haven business card
with "Sailorman Jack" "Tobacconist" printed on it.... His face was
glowing with happiness...

I didn't knew that I would be this sad for a person I've never actually
met. Perhaps the reason is the joy I always got from reading the
Morning Watch Smoke posts.

I would like to ask people to send me stories, anecdotes, photographs,
and whatever they think is worth sharing about Jack. I'm making a page
dedicated to his memory that will be put in a permanent place on the
Alt Smokers Pipes website.

This is a sad day, indeed.

I have known Sailorman Jack for more than 25 years and like the rest of
the community have lost a good friend. We first met in 1980 at the old
Pipeworks store in NYC and Jack's unique outlook and genuine love of
the hobby made him a respected member of our regulars. Jack was the
founder of the N.Y. Pipe Club and served as our president, for more
than 10 years, until he resigned.
Every month he mailed out a newsletter recporting on the last months
meeting as wel as interesting anecdotes about the hobby. Our club
meetings were always well attended, due to his efforts despite the
growing antismoking sentiment.
Jack was a talented man, a singer, story teller and lover of tobacco
lore. I am playin his CD of Sea Chantys and smoking a bowl in his
memory. He will be missed by his many friends.

Premal,

Thanks for everything you did for Sailorman. My sympathy to you and to
his family and friends. I don't know why, but whenever I read Jack's
posts, the song Southern Cross by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young always
came to mind.

Got out of town on a boat, going to Southern islands.
Sailing a reach before a following sea.
She was making for the trades on the outside, and the downhill run to
Papeete.

Off the wind on this heading lie the Marquesas,
we got eighty feet of the waterline, nicely making way.
In a noisy bar in Avalon, I tried to call you.
But on a midnight watch I realized why twice you ran away.

Think about how many times I have fallen. Spirits are using me, larger
voices calling.
What heaven brought you and me cannot be forgotten.
I have been around the world, looking for that woman-girl who knows
love can endure.
And you know it will, and you know it will.

When you see the Southern Cross for the first time,
you understand now why you came this way.
Cause the truth you might be running from is so small.
But it's as big as the promise, the promise of a coming day.
So I'm sailing for tomorrow, my dreams are a dying.
And my love is an anchor tied to you, tied with a silver chain.
I have my ship and all her flags are a flying.
She is all that I have left and music is her name.

Think about how many times I have fallen. Spirits are using me, larger
voices calling.
What heaven brought you and me cannot be forgotten.
I have been around the world, looking for that woman-girl who knows
love can endure.
And you know it will, and you know it will.

So we cheated and we lied and we tested
and we never failed to fail, it was the easiest thing to do.
You will survive being bested.
Somebody fine will come along, make me forget about loving you at the
Southern Cross.

Although I didn't know Sailorman personally, I am very grateful for his
online camaraderie and sage advice on my returning to the briar. Reading
all the tributes not only underscores this, but gladens me knowing there is
such warmth and good spirits in this group. Although we are all quite
different in our tastes and views, it's remarkable to me that a real
community has developed with only our love of the briar a common
demominator. And so it is I can truly say I will miss Sailorman and feel a
real sadness at his passing.

I will think of him often, especially while enjoying a good bowl. But
someone is going to have to help me with the peanut butter thing, because I
can never get it to really dissolve in my coffee! Tasty enough, though.

Its been over a dozen years since I had seen Jack bought I thought we'd
meet up again at some point :( What a delight to find him here, and
our alternate society won't be the same without him. Fortunately his
words and thoughts still live in cyberspace, and we may read them any
time we wish. Unfortunately there won't be more, but at least this can
be reminder for us to all enjoy our lives as Jack has done.

I really hope that all of you that knew him and have photos of him will

Perhaps someone could collect it all together on the ASP web pages?
